Sentan Island is a small island surrounded by the Yuden Sea. It exists in a state of dreamlike tranquility, cut off from the war between the Northern Government and the Southern Continent Free Zone. Our hero, Akiyuki Takehara, lives on Sentain Island along with his mother Fusa. He is currently separated from his father, the town doctor Ryuzo, but the bond between father and son remains. One day, after taking Ryuzo the lunch that Fusa has made for him as usual, Akiyuki arrives at school, where he is caught up in an explosion along with his friends, Haru and Furuichi. The explosion produces a mysterious light, which enters Akiyuki's arm, causing him excruciating pain. He's given no time to understand it, however, as the white-haired girl who rode on the bus with him guides him to a power unlike anything he's ever known.
When a peaceful island is dragged into a violent war, a young boy transforms into a powerful mecha/human hybrid known as Xam’d.
Akiyuki is taken aboard the air ship Zanbani to control the dangerous power of the mysterious mecha within him.
Though Nakiami tries to help Akiyuki control the Xam’d within him, the deadly humanforms are still drawn to its power.
A mysterious seer helps Akiyuki discover clues about the purpose of the Xam’d. Meanwhile, the Free Zone military builds an anti-humanform base.
Nakiami has a secret meeting with the black market pirate Zeygend. And the military begin using innocent Islanders in their humanform experiments.
Akiyuki’s friends join the Free Zone military. And Nakiami disobeys Captain Ishu in order to save a humanform from turning into stone.
When the Free Zone military attacks a humanform, they discover a shocking secret about the creature they mean to destroy. Akiyuki begins a dangerous mission.
When the tracking device fails, Nakiami sets out to find Akiyuki. Also, Haru and Furuichi’s mission to find an ASP suit is only a cover for a much darker purpose for General Kakisu.
The crew of the Zanbani celebrates the return of Raigyo. Dr. Kanba begins to use the green soulstone to perfect the anti-humanform weapons.
The truth about Raigyo’s connection with the Xam’d is revealed. And Akiyuki finds a reluctant mentor.
