The episode opens with shows on a white car (1986 Toyota Trueno) driving down a mountain road sometime during the night. There are various views of the interior and exterior of the car, though the driver remains unseen as the car drifts and slides down the mountain road with near perfect driving skill at high speed (130km/h). It passes by a man in a car driving in the opposite direction, who comments (on seeing the car) ""So he's still driving in these mountains..."" The scene cuts to two teenage boys (Itsuki and Takumi), Itsuki reading a car magazine and lamenting about the cost of new cars. He comments that he could buy an '86 for about 30,000 yen, but he's only got about 5,000. His friend (Takumi) seems completely disinterested by car talk. Shortly, a girl (Natsuki) arrives, surprising both boys. She asks if they're surprised she's talking to them, then goes on to ask why Itsuki and Takumi could only have made 12,000 yen while working such long hours. Since she's never worked, she
At the end of the last episode, the '86 had just made a perfect drift on a dangerous turn, leaving Keisuke in it's dust, trying to figure out how the '86, a 10 year old car, passed him easily. At the tofu shop (also the Fujiwara home) Takumi recieves a phone call that wakes him up, and goes to meen Natsuki in town, as she wants to spend the day with him. Takumi agrees since they've never had a major argument. Natsuki asks Takumi if he can drive, and he says he can, so Natsuki says he can drive them to a picnic, not caring his car is ""just an old tofu delivery car."" As they talk, Natsuki suggests a trip to the beach. Meanwhile, Iketani finds the '86 parked at the tofu shop, and tries to figure out why his boss thinks so highly of it. He's about to leave when Takumi gets home and asks what he's doing there. They go for a drive, and Iketani asks why Takumi didn't know what an '86 is, when his dad owns one. Takumi didn't realise, because it says Trueno on it. At the gas station, Itsu
After crashing his car, Iketani is taken to hospital by the 4WD driver he nearly crashed into. One of his teammates tells Itsuki and Takumi what happened the next day at work, that he crashed and his car is wrecked. Itsuki freaks out, becuase now there is noone with a hope of beating the RedSuns in the race coming up that Saturday. Iketani gets out of hospital and goes to check on his car, but it's still a wreck, as the parts aren't available. He goes to the tofu shop to see Bunta, and begs him to race in his place to beat the RedSuns. Bunta calls him crazy. Iketani rants about how they can't let the RedSuns move in and win on Akina turf. After he leaves, Bunta goes to the gas station right after it closses to see the owner. They're old friends, obviously, and Bunta asks if he told Iketani about his young days as a racer. The owner says admits that he did. Bunta tells him about Iketani's plea, and they talk for awhile about Bunta's days as a great street racer and how Iketani is
The Takahashi brothers make last minute adjustments to the FD while waiting for the 86 to arrive. Keisuke starts to get pissed off with waiting and is determined to use his frustration to really beat the Speed Stars badly in the race. Itsuki arrives on a scooter after Takumi failed to pick him up, and since it's nearly time, Iketani relies on Kenji to race in his place. Just before they start, the finish line checkpoint reports an incoming car. They;re waiting for it to get past the set race ocurse before commencing, only to realise it's the 86, finally arriving. They delay the race until it shows up to race. Takumi approaches, trying to figure out why so many people are here. He doesn't care about the race, just the full tank of gas he'll get. Everyone is waiting expectantly as the 86 finally arrives, Itsuki struggles to see who the driver is through the crowd... then everyone is amazed when it's Takumi, the guy who knows nothing about cars. Iketani tries to figure out why Bunta s
The race between Keisuke and Takumi continues. The crowd lining the sides of the track are absolutely stunned by the display of driving, especially that the outdated '86 Trueno can keep up with a sports car like the RX7. Ryousuke gets on the radio and tells the man at the next turn checkpoint to explain exactly what he sees. On a particularly sharp turn, Keisuke moves to turn it normally, but the '86 takes the inside! At the speed the cars are travelling, trying to enter on the inside is scuicidal. Suddenly, there is a crunch noise as the '86 enters the turn, then somehow it manages to stay on the inside of the turn as though it's stuck to the road, completely defying the laws of physics and it's supposed tyre grip. Watching the race, Takeshi Nakazato, the Night Kids leader says that he knows exactly how the '86 pulled off that turn. He brags to himself that only he will beat the Akina '86, then gets into his Skyline and drives off. At the bottom of the mountain, the cars round t
Ryousuke Takahashi is driving around Akina, when Takeshi Nakazato tails him in his Skyline. Ryousuke is just going to let him pass until he realsies what kind of car it is, and decides to race. He speeds up, and Takeshi makes chase, taking the turns straight while Ryousuke drifts them. Down in the town, Takumi is just dropping Natsuki off from their trip to the beach. Before gettingo ut of the cat, Natsuki comments that even though Takumi's car is old, it's reliable and 'cute'. She asks what it's called, and Takumi says it's a Trueno. She asks if he'll use the Trueno next time they go out, then leaves, saying she'll call him. Takumi talks to the car once she's gone: ""She called you cute. What am I going to do with you?"" Back on the mountain, Takeshi is smug that his R32 Skyline can keep up with the famous Ryousuke Takahashi, without drifting. Ryousuke pulls over (as does Takeshi) and introduces himself. Takeshi introduces himself, but while Ryousuke recognises the name, he remember
The episode opens with a flashback to the locker room at school, where three guys are talking about Natsuki. The ringleader of the little group brags that if he wanted Natsuki, it would be no problem to score with her, that all girls will do it whether they like it or not. Takumi happes to be there, and is of course, none too pleased to hear guys talking smack about her. He confronts the group, and a brief scuffle ensues with Takumi the victor, standing over the other guy. Takumi awakes from this flashback/dream, and starts thinking about his trip to the beach with Natsuki. Noticing the time he leaves for work. At work, Yuuichi is looking for Iketani, but it seems he's not there. Itsuki thinks he called in sick and jokes about how he passed out after only three turns in Takumi's car. In any case, Yuuichi needs something delivered and lets Takumi take his car to deliver the bills since Iketani isn't around. As he leaves, Itsuki asks Yuuichi why he never lets him take deliveries, sin
Kenji is driving Itsuki and Iketani up the mountain, the trio noticing how many people are here to watch the race. Itsuki si freaking out because he's responsible for pissing off so many people. Takumi is at home trying to find out where Bunta is, hoping he comes home in time as he thinks about everything.. his conversations with his father and his boss. Back on the mountain, the trio are somewhat panicking about the race. Itsuki just wants to go apologise to Nakazato and leave, but Iketani is holding out hope that Takumi will show up, since it's only 9:15. The others aren't convinced he can win even if he does come, but Iketani has a new attitude. With so much experience on this mountain, Takumi should have the advantage, even against a much more powerful car. At 9:20, the Takahashi's show up for the race. Takeshi Nakazato brags some more about how he's going to defeat the 86 and rpove his superiority over the Takahashi's. Ryousuke doesn't really care what he says, noticing the
The episode starts off with a short recap of episode 8: Takumi lying onh is bed thinking about cars and why his attitude has changed lately, getting the car back, and driving up to the mountain to start the race... Standing beside their cars, Takumi and Takeshi size each other up some, Takeshi surprised Takumi is so young: he can't have had his license very long. Takumi is just looking at the car, thinking about what Yuuichi told him. Takeshi cuts off the reverie, introducing himself. Takumi introduces himself in return. Takeshi vows to remember his name. Meanwhile, Yuuichi is still talking to Bunta on the phone, unsure that Takumi can cope with the changes to the 86 in time to adjust in the race. Yuuichi wonders why Bunta didn't tell him about the change, but Bunta says it would be pointless. Takumi doesn't think while driving, since he doesn't know cars. He just feels his way through things. He should be alright. The finish line station lets the start line know the road is cl
There is a brief recap of the race so far to kick off the episode, up to the 5 consecutive turns where Keisuke lost his race. The crowd is shocked to see the 86 so close to the 32. There are some great racing scenes of the two cars (so, not alot of dialogue or plot developments to cap here). The racers are still being closely followed by Ryousuke's RX7. As they get into the turns, Nakazato realises he's close ot the spot where the 86 used it's gutter technique to beat Keisuke, and moves so that Takumi can't take the inside. Keisuke also notices this. Stripped of the ability to gutter-drift, Takumi tries to drift around Nakazato from the outside of the turn, cutting it so close to the opposite side of the track with his back wheels, they kick up dirt onto the bystanders. Nakazato catches the move in time and moves to block Takumi. There are three turns left now, and once again, Takumi tries to take the outside as Nakazato clocks the inside. Once again, Nakazato blocks his attempt.
