Saga (サガ) is the 'main antagonist' of the fifth movie. He's a childhood friend of Zoro's (both went to the same dojo together) and Maya's friend and possible love-interest. The real Saga is a friendly, honorable, and ambitous young man. He fell into depression after losing use of his right arm, but was brought out of it by Maya, whom he met when he drifted to her island. He was accepted into her village and later fought alongside them when they were attacked by pirates. During the fight, he and Maya ran into the shrine that housed the Seven Stars Sword. He fell under the evil influence of the sword when he used it out of desperation to save her from the pirates. The sword possessed Saga to try to rise to full power and bring darkness to the world. Saga took over and possessed an entire Marine dojo to help in the quest.

Saga is often described by other characters as someone with the kindness of an angel but with the darkness of a demon. This ambivalence ended up creating a split personality: a good Saga that was extremely loyal to Athena and an evil one that keep the control of the body most of the time and killed the previous Pope to steal his place. Sometimes it is hinted that the creation of his "bad" personality had the influence of some external force, although nothing was clearly stated. When it takes the control of Saga's body, his hair turn from blond to jet-black (the color schemes were altered for the anime, in which Saga's normally blue hair turned light grey). The Great Toad Sage is the oldest and most respected toad of all the inhabitants of Mount My�boku. Because of his age, the other toads affectionately call him Great Honorable Geezer. He is famed for his highly accurate prophecies. Being several thousand years old, he is the oldest and most respected among the population of Mount My�boku. At his great age, the Great Toad Sage seems to constantly smile and tends to have his eyes closed or squinting. He is portrayed and described as being senile, and sometimes out of touch with his present situation, so he does tend to forget things easily and quite quickly. However, when reminded, he is still able to remember things and can easily tell things very precisely. As a sage, he is also very wise, and is quick to stop Shima and Fukasaku from bickering and encourages harmony. It would seem that unlike most other toads, he actually has respect for Jiraiya, and has urged both Shima and Fukasaku to cooperate with him
