Unlike most other members of Fairy Tail, she joined the guild as an employee rather than as a Mage. When she was young, she was turned into a snake by an evil wizard. She was turned back by Makarov after the master realized that she was actually a human. Kinana had no recollection of being a snake when she was first turned back, but recently her memory as a snake has slowly resurfaced, in which she hears a voice asking to hear her thoughts. The person calling out for her is actually Cobra and she used to be his snake.

After Ur gave her life to save Gray from Deliora by encasing it in ice, Lyon blamed Gray for depriving him of his chance to surpass her. Lyon performs his ice magic with one hand, a faster though less reliable alternative to Gray's two-hand magic. Similarly, unlike the static ice creations Gray makes, Lyon's ice takes the form of animals that can move about after their creation. He has a crush on Juvia. He later returns as a member of Lamia Scale, along with Sherry and Rock-Iron Jura to aid their alliance in the defeat of the Oracion Six. The class president in Toru's class (1-D), he is a highly respected member of the school: due to his much-revered older brother and his own excellence in both academic performance and character, he is referred to as "Sakamoto-sama" by his peers regardless of their seniorities, and all students bow when they see him, though he feels somewhat intimidated by such reverence. For pretty much the same reasons, he has been hand-picked by Arisada as the next in line for the student council president and has on quite a number of occasions shown great leadership skills. In the past, Akira had often been pointed out as the only "average" looking person in his family by both himself and strangers.
