The main antagonist, Naraku (literally means "underworld", or "hell") is responsible for nearly every character’s suffering throughout the series. He is a han'you that originated from a bandit named Onigumo ("Demon Spider"). Naraku's main goal is to collect all of the shards of the Shikon no Tama in order to become a full Youkai. His platonic love for Kikyo is what drove him to kill Kikyo and seal Inuyasha on the tree and the basic reason he became a demon.

Kagura (lit. Music of the gods) is a wind sorceress created from Naraku's own body. Despite this, she has her own mind and is willing to fight desperately for freedom. Her first appearance involves Kagura's use of the "Shikabane Mai," or "Dance of the Dead," to lure out Koga's companions and slaughter them. Following this, she splattered Inuyasha in the blood, causing Koga to arrive to "avenge his companions." Unbeknownst to Koga, he has a false Shikon no Tama shard rather than the real one-and upon severly injuring Inuyasha, he is immobilized by Kagura's fake. Assured that she has won the battle, Kagura steps forward to take the real shikon shards as well as Koga's life. This is interrupted by Inuyasha, who proceeds to fight Kagura and is on the verge of being killed when he is finally able to interrupt Kagura's winds to unleash a Kaze no Kizu. Surprised, Kagura flees, briefly showing a spider-shaped burn scar on her back similar to Naraku's. She realizes that Naraku has been using her and proceeds to attack him, being stopped when he squeezes her heart and tells him that he holds her life in his hands. Since then, Kagura has worked to kill him, often using others. Following the first meeting, Kagura encounters Inuyasha and defeats him easily with the help of Kanna. Naraku orders her to carry out much of his work, but does not regret losing her when she openly betrays him. Kagura meets Sesshoumaru and decides his strength is enough to destroy Naraku. She locates Toukijin and tells him where it is, and then watches his fighting skills. Later, when he realizes she is using him, Kagura does not deny it, but rather comes clean about it. Over time, Kagura becomes increasingly reckless in her attempts to kill Naraku and begins to use Inuyasha as a pawn as well. She often attacks Koga, feeling he is useless in her plans. Naraku often teams Kagura with Kohaku to do his jobs. When both realize that the other is also after Naraku's life, they become allies and plot together to destroy his heart. Eventually, Hakudoushi and Moryoumaru come after Kohaku's shikon shards, Kagura protects him at the cost of her own life. Naraku mocks her, giving back her heart and then subsequently poisoning her. Kagura realizes she has a short time to live, and flying away, falls into a field of flowers. There she notices she can no longer move and begins to despair. Sesshoumaru shows up, following the scent of Naraku's miasma and having realized Kagura was in danger. He attempts to save her with Tenseiga, but this does not work. Soon after, Inuyasha's team arrives and Kagura dissolves into the wind, happy to have been able to see Sesshoumaru before she died. Kagura's death supplied Sesshoumaru's heart with enough new feelings to allow the growth of his sword, Tenseiga. The wind blows as he promises to make her death worth something. This same strong, but not dangerous, wind appears to Kanna, and she notes that it is Kagura. Naraku replaces Kagura with Byakuya, his final incarnation.

Souta is the little brother of Kagome Higurashi. He is a nice kid who cares a lot about his sister. Souta also thinks Inuyasha is cool.

The trio are Kagome Higurashi's present day school friends who seem to be quite nosy when it comes to her personal life. They are always nudging Kagome to make advances on Hojo, a popular school boy who obviously admires her. And when they first hear about InuYasha, they constantly encourage her to drop him due to her seemly bizarre descriptions of him; however, in later episodes Kagome's three classmates begin to like "Mr. Possessive." In episode 160 entitled "The Lucky But Two-Timing Scoundrel!" the girls finally meet InuYasha and find his exotic appearance intriguing, officially approving of him which makes Kagome considerably happy. Ayumi is the most naive and gentle of the group of friends. Unlike Eri and Yuka, who feel that Kagome's "delinquent boyfriend" is bad news and are thus constantly encouraging Hojo on his romantic, albeit platonic, pursuits of said time-traveling schoolgirl, Ayumi is almost always shown as supportive of the couple. Some of this is, of course, due to her innocent demenor and optimism; however, she does believe that Kagome truly is in love, and that because of this any problems the couple might stumble upon may be overcome. Tessaiga- Kaze no Kizu, Bakuryuuha, Kongousoha, and Meido Zangetsuha Family: Izayoi (mom), InuTaisho (dad), and Sesshoumaru (half-brother) The male protagonist, a hybrid of a youkai-dog and a human, a half-demon ("han'yo" in Japanese). He wields the Tessaiga (pronounced "Tetsaiga" in the American dub), a supernatural sword made from one of his deceased father's fangs. This sword, when properly wielded, can destroy one hundred demons with a single swing, and has further powers which are revealed as the story progresses. It is also a source of which hatred exists between Inuyasha and his brother Sesshomaru, a full youkai dog demon, being that Inuyasha can wield the Tessaiga and Sesshomaru can not. Inuyasha has a tendency for massive regeneration and can recover from injuries which would be fatal for any average human. This ability is likely derived from his youkai powers (Example: Episode 5, when Kagome brings medicine from her time). On the night of the new moon each month, Inuyasha will change into a normal human with black hair, brown eyes, and loses his yokai power during this time. Prior to meeting his current companions, he would conceal himself during this time. Inuyasha loves Kikyo, and still does, but things get complicated when he starts to develop feelings of love for Kagome. He has mastered different abilities for his sword including the red tessaiga that can destroy barriers and also learning the backlash wave which hurls an opponents demonic energy right back at it.

A shrine maiden who loved InuYasha throughout the series and was killed by Naraku (disguised as Inuyasha) who tore the two apart fifty years prior (in InuYasha's time) to the story's start. She is brought back to life by the ogress Urasue. Although she acts alive, her body is still "dead," and she must ingest the souls of the dead to move. Her body is made of bones and graveyard soil with most of her soul in her reincarnation. Still under the impression that Inuyasha had betrayed her, she tries to kill him. However, after learning from her sister Kaede that Naraku was behind her death and that he had turned her and Inuyasha against each other, her feelings for Inuyasha returns while making plans to destroy Naraku. Although she does not appear to entirely reciprocate Inuyasha feelings throughout most of their encounters, it is heavily applied they still have feelings for each other and make even more complicated by Kagome who she is aware of feelings for her lover. Throughout her journey, she has retain some characteristics of her former life such as helping those in need, being an older sibling figure while pursuing Naraku. She ends up saving Kohaku and Miroku's lives and dies peacefully in arms of InuYasha after being attacked by Naraku. Her life finally ends by the actions of Naraku, but not before sharing one passionate kiss from Inuyasha and feeling satisfied. Her soul is then carried by her soul collectors into the sky (it is implied that it returned to the afterlife).

A yokai-flea who is InuYasha's source of information. He usually runs away from dangerous situations. He was initially charged with protecting the remains/gravesite of InuYasha's father which held the Tessaiga. The Grave was hidden inside the black pearl in InuYasha's right eye and was opened during his first run-in with his elder brother, Sesshoumaru. Myouga also enjoys drinking yokai blood, and actually saves InuYasha's life at one point by drinking the poison out of his blood. Because of that, he often gets slapped by InuYasha (and sometimes by Kagome too), but never dies from it since he's immortal.
