One day, Kou suddenly moved away without any notice leaving behind a stunned Futaba. Futaba's life took a drastic turn after Kou's departure—the other boys started to take notice of Futaba's flawless face, alienating her from the rest of the girls. They began to hate Futaba and blame her eventually exiling her all together. Now in high school, Futaba is determined to not be too girly in order to avoid a repetition of what happened in her middle school years. When she confesses to Kou, she is rejected. Touma confesses to her even after knowing that she loves Kou. She starts dating him when he says that he won't give up and will definitely make her fall in love with him. The reason that she started dating was so that she could forget her feelings for Kou. Later when Kou realises that he can never love anyone else but Futaba, he goes after her even though he knows that she is dating Touma. She also comes to terms to her real feelings that she loves only Kou. She breaks up with Touma and starts dating Kou. At times she is even shown to be too obsessive about Kou that she tells she wants to see his all types of faces like when crying or smiling or blushing. She even tells that she wants him also to be the same for her.
The main protagonist of the story. She has a secret that she is a professional mangaka who draws shoujo manga. After an accident at school, Tomoya finds out her secret, and remembering some advice from her editor, she asked him for a date so that she could learn more and improve her work. However, throughout the series, she is easily embarrassed by having any contact with boys (especially Tomoya) and often turns either extremely red or melts into goo. Later on, she falls in love with Tomoya although she questions their relationship. She becomes jealous when Tomoya shoots a kissing scene with an actress (who is also a fan of Rena's works). He is currently attending the same high school as Futaba under a new last name (probably his mother's). He eventually admits to being "Tanaka-kun," and while acting cold and uncaring toward her most of the time, his nice side becomes gradually more prominent. It's revealed that he moved away to live with his mother due to his parent's divorce. His mother's later terminal illness, caused him terrible grief and trauma, eventually resulting in his change of personality.
Not affiliated with the Arachna military, he is a "lone rider" with his partner, Brutus. He made a promise to find the purple spider Portia, supposed to be Brutus's younger sister, and this promise keeps him joining the ranks of Arachna. He later joins up with Hunter and the others to prevent the Invectids from stealing the Oracle Keys. He is somewhat obsessed with rescuing Portia from the Invectids. Magma is a great admirer of the hero Quake; each time he sees Quake in action, he has tears streaming from his eyes. Another sleeper on Second Earth who is paired with Tony. She is very young and often naive. She immediately gravitates towards Yuji, seeing Marlene as an obstacle to a relationship with him.
Rei is a singer in the pop music group CHAM! After Mima left, Rei and Yukiko become more popular, which results of them getting into the best singing group charts. She does seem to care about Mima, even when she changed careers. In one scene in the film, Rei and Yukiko are on their radio talk show and when they bid goodbye to the audience, Mima's apparition appears.
