In the original manga, Briareos (her lover and partner) was a cyborg before Deunan arrived at Olympus, and she managed to lose an eye in Volume 4, due to a training accident. Deunan soon becomes embroiled in the fight between a faction of humans and Olympus as some humans strive to wipe out the Biodriods completely. Tsubaki was a young miko (Shrine Maiden) in training like Kikyo when she was alive. She studied under a priest at a Shinto shrine as an apprentice and she and Kikyou were rivals, sometimes battling side-by-side to defeat youkai, Tsubaki always attempting to better Kikyou using her own holy power. While Kikyo and Kaede were traveling the countryside to visit small villages and help slay youkai, Tsubaki laid a curse on Kikyo, telling her that as a miko she must abandon her heart, for if she ever fell in love with a man she would lose her holy powers and suffer an untimely death answered by Kikyo's cool denial. Tsubaki only places the curse on Kikyo in the anime.

Tsubaki was Yuki and Jun's mother. She was a lively woman with a tattoo of camellias on her left shoulder. She was sold into prostitution at a young age to pay a debt. She meets Ryuu through Ashiei and the two fall in love She is somehow friends with Hyoudou. After being taken in by Ashiei, she is abused and gives birth to Jun, dying not long afterwards from an unknown disease. While dying, she tells Yuki never to give up.
