Pryce (Yanagi in original Japanese language versions) is in charge of the Glacier Badge, and resides in Mahogany Town. He is an expert on Ice types. His signature Pokémon are Swinub and Piloswine. Pryce's name may be derived from the word ice. In the anime Pryce starts out as a cold and abrasive man who believes that Pokémon are for battling and nothing more, as a result of an incident from his youth. During a storm, his beloved Piloswine disappeared and Pryce believed it to have abandoned him. During an encounter with Ash, the two of them are trapped underground and come across a frozen Piloswine, which turns out to be Pryce's. Realizing that it had tried to find healing herbs (the two had previously been badly burned by a Magmar), Pryce reconciles with his reunited Pokémon and turns over a new leaf, once again seeing Pokémon as friends. Afterwards, Pryce battles Ash having his Dewgong defeated by Cyndaquil and Piloswine by Pikachu winning Ash the glacier badge. In the manga Possessing an ability to control his ice sculptures as if they were real Pokemon, for training, Pryce is the oldest Gym Leader of Johto and lives by himself, rarely visited. For some reason he, like Whitney, was not visited by Suicune like the rest of the Gym Leaders. Pryce's main Pokemon is his Swinub. It turns out Mask of Ice, the villain of the Gold/Silver/Crystal chapter is actually another ice puppet created by Pryce and controlled by him (via Pokegear when necessary). Pryce's plan is to use Ho-oh and Lugia's feathers and create a special Pokeball with which Celebi, a time-traveling Pokemon could be caught. His aim is to repair his old mistake as a trainer, which caused a death of two of his Pokemon just before their egg hatched. Pryce actually succeeds in all of his plans and disappears in the stream of time after Celebi escapes. He does realize his mistakes however and his life-long pain gets healed. Anime: Ash was sent to Johto to deliver the GS Ball to Kurt for study and found Azalea Town suffering through a drought. Ash accidentally stepped on the tail of a local Slowpoke, and he was chased by an angry mob, but Kurt disguised him and his friends in Slowpoke costumes and saved them. Kurt lived in Azalea Town, a town that considered Slowpoke sacred for their mythical abilities to cause rainfall. Ash and his friends met him while investigating Slowpoke Well because he heard strange noises coming from within. It turned out that Team Rocket was trying to steal the Slowpoke. Ash helped recover the Slowpoke and defeated Team Rocket. Later, Kurt received the GS Ball. Ash wanted to see if Kurt would make him special Poké Balls. Kurt gave Ash, Brock, and Misty each a Fast Ball as thanks for helping them. Ash and his friends gathered Apricorns and Kurt made Ash and Misty Lure Balls, and made Brock a Heavy Ball. As of the latest anime episode, Kurt is still studying the GS Ball. Manga: Silver got a Heavy Ball from Kurt, intending to catch an Ursaring with it. Kurt cautioned Silver that only experienced trainers could wield his special Poké Balls. Later, Gold met Maisy and Kurt. Kurt explained that once, his ancestors were the only ones capable of creating Poké Balls until companies started to mass produce them. Kurt then carried a slight grudge against Gold for making fun of his Apricorn Balls, saying that Gold wasn't experienced enough to use his special Balls, something that annoyed Gold. He then challenged Gold to catch a Pokémon using one of his balls and if he couldn't by dusk, he would have to become his apprentice, which he accepted. Kurt made a Friend Ball for Gold, and later Gold and Silver were able to use their custom Poké Balls to capture a Teddiursa and Ursaring. Silver kept Ursaring for himself while Gold gave Teddiursa to Maisy. Kurt then appeared at Slowpoke Well, to see a mass of Team Rocket Grunts tied up and defeated, everyone wondering who did it. Later, the Masked Man forced Kurt to turn over his plans for the GS Ball. In their youth, Professor Oak, Agatha, Kurt, Pryce, and the old couple who run the Goldenrod City Pokémon Daycare were all close friends. She is a test tube baby like Rudolf. It is unknown if she is the blood sister of Rudolf. Nevertheless she respects and loves Rudolf dearly to a level beyond siblings, and dislikes Aika for "seducing" her brother Rudolf. A sadistic character and unstable mood, she walks around in her bare essentials and makes sure the black Delmos are punished for failure. She later receives from Rudolf an Alternate Metal panty which allows her to transform to a powered up form. However, the device fusing into her soon runs out of control, and she becomes a hideous monster. In this form she embraces and kills her brother and flees into space cradling his corpse. Anime: Brawly is in charge of the Knuckle Badge and resides in Dewford Town. Brawly's name contains the word brawl in it, referring to fighting; his Japanese name TÅ�ki can be literally translated as "fighting spirit." Brawly specializes in Fighting-type Pokémon, and once trained alongside Kanto Elite Four member Bruno. In the Pokémon anime series, Brawly is a Gym Leader who likes to Surf and train his Pokémon at the same time. His Pokémon move like the waves, always changing and avoiding attacks through the course of battle. He also has a private island which has a training facility and a battle field that has many geysers on it. Ash loses to Brawly the first time, when he relies only on brute strength. However, in the rematch, his Corphish and Treecko use the forces of nature to defeat Brawly's Machop and Hariyama. Manga: Brawly also trains his Pokémon by surfing with them in Pokémon Adventures. His strategy is to use "subtle forces" over speed and power to use his opponents' strength against them. He also likes to save his Pokémon's evolutions for battles. During his match with Sapphire, his Makuhita evolved into Hariyama. Sapphire figured out that his use of Counter could be overcome by moves which attacked with multiple hits, such as Double Kick. Due to a misunderstanding, she was also expecting Brawly's Pokémon to evolve. Brawly sided with Team Aqua in the Hoenn conflict because he wanted more places to surf. He changed his mind after Kyogre and Groudon started their rampage. His opponent during the Kyogre/Groudon fiasco was Mack. Using direct, brutal strength instead of his usual strategy, he defeated him at the cost of his own Pokémon. He was last seen on the Pokémon Association's airship "Ba.Goon," resting from his injuries.
Tate is known as the 7th gym leader along with his twin sister Liza in Mossdeep, Hoenn. In the anime, he is always picked on by his sister Liza for being a couple of minutes younger than she is (and thus is inexperienced compared to her). His prized pokemon is Solrock.
Falkner's only anime appearance was in the episode Fighting Flyer with Fire. When Ash's Pikachu gets stolen by Team Rocket, Falkner arrives and rescues Pikachu with the help of his Pidgeot. He flies around on a glider, yearning to be as close to Flying Pokémon as he possibly can be. He is usually seen with his Hoothoot on his shoulder. Falkner has a self-righteous attitude when it comes to Pokémon training, which tends to anger Ash. Falkner also expresses an intense dislike for the prejudice against the Flying-types' weakness to Electric-types, but proves a slight hypocrisy as he criticizes Ash's poor choice of using Chikorita (weak to Flying-types) in their match. The Violet City Gym itself is a very tall, spiral-shaped building. Falkner has his matches on the roof of the Gym. Falkner has many students who chant in unison during his battles. Ash was able to win the Zephyr Badge, despite his Charizard's wing being severely injured during the match.
Erika is the Gym Leader of Celadon City's Gym, known officially as the Celadon Gym. She hands out the Rainbow Badge to trainers who defeat her. She is a serene young woman who specializes in Grass-type Pokémon. She sometimes dresses in elegant kimonos and seems to represent traditional Japanese beauty, and perhaps geisha culture.
