Risetsu, is the kirin of the kingdom of Han. She has served her ruler, Go Ranjou, for 300 years and has the appearance of an innocent young girl, though is known for being mischievous. The pair get along extremely well and Ranjou fondly refers to her as his "princess," showering her with gifts and indulging her tantrums. Risetsu travels to Kei with her master as his attendant when the search for Taiki begins. To avoid revealing her true identity, she borrows the koseisan, a sacred treasure from her king that allows her to appear as someone an onlooker wishes to see; for Youko, Hanrin's immediate appearance resembles Youko's late friend, Rangyoku. She joins Keiki, Enki, and Renrin to search for Taiki in Hourai and offers the use of Han's royal treasure, the kouyoukyou, a mirror that dematerializes the image of the person or creature it reflects and allows infinite replication, though the replicas are limited in terms of capability. When Taiki is found, she is horrified to learn how Taiki's shirei have become defiled from living in Hourai so long. After Taiki is brought back to the Twelve Kingdoms, she and Ranjou return to Han.
She is the mother of Rakushun and citizen of Kou. When Rakushun brought wounded Youko to their home, she helped to nurse her. After she had recovered and not knowing who to trust, Youko was afraid that she might report about her to the soldiers of Kou. After Keiki's rescue and her return to Kei, Youko goes on a trip and visits Rakushun's mother in order to thank her for her kindness.
Gyokuyo is the personal handmaiden of Youko when she reigns as the monarch of Kei. She ranks high amongst the palace staff and is trusted with ensuring Youko's well-being for domestic matters, and has served the kingdom for a long time. While she appears to be a woman in middle age, Gyokuyo's age is unknown and it is implied that she is much older than she seems. Prior to becoming Youko's personal maid, Gyokuyo served in the Ministry of Spring and was involved in administrating the kingdom's education system, though she was removed from her position late in the reign of Jokaku when the late ruler banished all the women from Kei. Though Youko remarks that she thinks it would be good for Gyokuyo to re-enter the administration, Gyokuyo tells her that she is satisfied with serving as Youko's maid. (Source: 12kingdoms.wikia)
Hourin was the kirin of the kingdom of Hou during the reign of Chuutatsu, the father of Shoukei; Chuutatsu is the second king she had chosen. When the king becomes increasingly fanatic about enacting harsh laws in hopes of ensuring his people become righteous, Hourin beseeched him to be more lenient. Her efforts unfortunately pushed further towards his belief that he needed even more austere measures and when Hourin has contracted shitsudou, Chuutatsu fails to see he has lost the way and continues to ruthlessly punish his people. The sickly Hourin is eventually confined in the Inner Palace with Chuutatsu's wife, Kaka, and his daughter, Shoukei. When Gekkei, the governor of the province of Kei, leads the rebellion to dispose of Chuutatsu, he arrives in the Inner Palace with his supporters and alarmed with how severe her shitsudou has become. Hourin willingly submits to being executed when Gekkei's supporters demand retribution for Hourin having selected two poor kings. (Source: wikia)
Joei is the younger sister of the previous queen of Kei, Jokaku, daughter of the Jou family. Unlike her sister, she is confident and believes herself to be qualified to be a monarch; as a result, she resents that Jokaku was chosen to be the queen instead. When Jokaku became increasingly withdrawn, Joei encouraged this attitude and took advantage of her sister's affection for her in order to gain power within the court. When Jokaku dies, Joei attempts to take control of Kei as its new monarch while Keiki disappeared from Kei in order to find the next king of Kei. Because she was not chosen by Keiki, Joei is not the true ruler of Kei and unable to enter the royal palace at Gyouten and is forced to take up residence in the palace of the governor of Sei Province. Her claim to the throne is augmented by the machinations of the king of Kou, who arranges for his kirin, Kourin, to capture and enchant Keiki so that he is unable to speak and convince the people of Kei that Joei is the new ruler. Her possession of Keiki is enough to convince any remaining provincial governors doubting her legitimacy to support her, with the exception of Koukan, the governor of the Baku Province. Aided by the king of En, the true ruler of Kei, Youko Nakajima, is able to overthrow the false queen and Joei is ousted from Kei. (Source: wikia)
