He is a tall, muscular man with a huge sword called the Dragon Slayer, a prosthetic left forearm that has a magnetic grip which also conceals a cannon. Guts is a tragic hero; he is born as one who may be able to struggle against Causality, but seemingly unable to affect it on a large scale. His name has often times been translated by some English scanlation groups as "Gatts", or "Gutts", or "Gattsu." However, the official translation provided to Dark Horse Comics by Kentaro Miura himself, is in fact, "Guts."
Griffith is the main antagonist of the series. He was the founder and leader of the mercenary unit known as the Band of the Hawk, named for his helmet which was forged in the shape of a Hawk's head. Extraordinarily charismatic, intelligent, and handsome, his skill with his sabre and tactics gives him and his band the reputation of invincibility, making him the favored choice of the Midland King, who was locked in a century long war with the Empire of Chuder. Believing that he is destined for greater things than the average man, Griffith is willing to sacrifice everything for the dream of his own kingdom and only values others so far as they are useful to him. The one exception seems to be Guts and Casca, both of whom he confides to in private moments. The source of his ambition is a Behelit given to him by a fortune teller she claimed was "The Egg of the King," which could lead an average person to becoming King himself.
A loud-mouthed ex-thief. Corkus was fond of delusions of grandeur and constantly at odds with Guts. He was the leader of his own band of thieves before he joined the old Band of the Hawk. Despite his unappealing nature, he was one of the most loyal members of the Band of the Hawk, staying with them until his death during the Eclipse.
A girl who befriends Hideo and Hiromi during their refuge at the Outlet Mall. Before the outbreak, she was a nurse. After discovering she's pregnant, Oda attempts to leave Hideo and Hiromi so as to not inconvenience them. They catch up with her, but Oda is eventually infected after being bitten by a zombie baby. In her last moments of human consciousness, she jumps into the back of a garbage truck along with the baby and manages to persuade Hiromi to push the button that operates the trucks mechanism, crushing her and the baby to death.
Hideo is a down-on-his-luck mangaka who found work as an assistant after his own series was cancelled due to poor sales. He comes across as fairly timid and insecure, but often has spurs of confidence. He suffers from delusions and is very anxious, especially when in the dark. Despite Japan's strict laws on firearms, he owns a shotgun to which he has a license. This makes him a very desirable person to hang around with following the outbreak, but Hideo is very serious when it comes to the law and won't allow anyone else to even touch his gun.

Hiromi is a teenage girl from an all-girl school who meets Hideo in the 'Sea of Trees' at the base of Mount Fuji. As first, she mistakes him for someone contemplating suicide and comforts him, after which the two become close friends. She has a boyfriend who she simply acknowledges as Shinji, though she hasn't seen him since the outbreak. Later, she is infected by a zombie baby but still retains most of her personality. However, at times she starts to see the world as some sort of child-like vision, viewing people as off-putting stuffed animals. After being infected, her strength increases substantially. During their refuge at the Outlet Mall, Hiromi is shot in the head by a nail gun. Afterwards, Oda is able to use her knowledge as a nurse to remove the nail and Hiromi surprisingly makes a complete recovery, from both being shot and her infection. She loses all the superficial symptoms of her infection, such as protruding black veins and bloodshot eyes, but retains much of her superhuman strength.
