Shinnosuke and his Grandfather both live in the forest of Ryugenzawa, where they protect the local villagers from the giant animals that they once kept as pets. Years ago when Akane was vacationing with her family in Ryugenzawa, she got lost in the forest and was attacked by a giant platypus. However she was saved by Shinnosuke. Some time later, Shinnosuke was near death by his grandfather, who took some of the Water of Life and fed it to Shinnosuke. Shinnosuke survived, but developed a dependency on the Water of Life. Years later, in the present, Akane once again hears about the forest of Ryugenzawa in a television advertisement asking for help in combating the increasing numbers of monsters and remembers Shinnosuke saving her. In an attempt to pay back Shinnosuke, Akane travels to Ryugenzawa to find him. In the process, Akane is attacked by a giant creature, and is saved, just like when she was young, by Shinnosuke, who still bears the marks on his back. Although he is now very forgetful, Shinnosuke invites Akane to stay with him and his grandfather. Shugesh (パンブキン; Panbukin) is a Saiyan warrior within the Saiyan Army, and one of the members of Bardock's team along with Borgos, Fasha, and Tora. While battling in Great Ape form in Planet Kanassa, his cheek is cut by a ki blast from a Kanassan to which he retaliates by crushing the Kanassan under his foot. Later, he tackles another Kanassan after he hit Bardock in the back of the neck. After the team destroyed Planet Meat's inhabitants, Shugesh is the first of his teammates to killed by Dodoria's elite under Frieza's orders. Akari Unryu comes from a family that raises sumo wrestling pigs. Her pig, Katsunishiki is the 14th yokozuna (grand champion) and is rampaging through Nerima when he encounters Ryoga. Due to a promise made with her father, Akari can only marry someone who defeats Katsunishiki, and so she becomes instantly infatuated with Ryoga, who makes short work of her pet pig. Ryoga initially has a lot of reservations about Akari. At first he thinks she's too good to be true, and then when her compliments towards him all seem to compare him to a pig, he mistakenly thinks she is trying to insult him. Finally he sees her for the kind, genuine person she really is, and reciprocates her feelings while still being torn between Akari and his devotion to Akane. Akari is head over heels in love with Ryoga. So much so that she even tries to learn to hate pigs for him. She is unsuccessful at breaking her joy of pigs, and feels unworthy of Ryoga, but once she discovers that he himself is actually a pig, she dances with joy that she has found the perfect man.
