In the manga, she also has freckles, and a complex about them as well. This is made worse by being roommates with Ayaka Yukihiro and Chizuru, who both have mature bodies and bigger breasts. Magister Negi Magi. She is student number twenty-one in Negi Springfield's class. Nagase is a practitioner of the Japanese martial art, ninjutsu. She trains in the mountains and is able to use a wide range of ninja abilities, such as creating clones. She has an easy-going attitude, and spends most of her time with her eyes nearly closed, a trait shared with Mitsune Konno, a character from Akamatsu's previous work, Love Hina. Only in special situations does she open one eye, and in some cases both eyes. She is also the blue Baka Ranger, which in the anime is made up of 5 girls with the lowest grade averages in the class. She's very friendly and outgoing, but not very smart: she's one of the Baka Rangers (a name given to the five worst students in Negi's class), Baka Pink. A minor character in the beginning of the series, Makie's role is slightly expanded on later on in the manga, where she finds herself having a small crush on Negi later in the series (mainly more so in her finding him cute than an actual crush). Despite her constant being around her teacher, though, she is unaware that he's a mage. In the Negima!? anime series her character is quite different. Although still cheerful and kind, she's now a form of comic relief; she's often made fun of and mocked by her roommate Ayaka. Despite this, though, the two get along somewhat well, sharing a dorm together even.

She and Asuna seem to hate each other, with the two often getting into fights, but it eventually becomes clear that they merely have an odd, but surprisingly close friendship that neither is willing to admit to. She is the girl most overtly fond of Negi, though she stands by the position that she is only interested in Negi because he "needs a mother figure". Though she is highly intelligent, she can often be clueless in relation to the events surrounding her. Two young sisters who took refuge at the Crimson Scholar's estate. Coming from a serf family of seven siblings, the sisters' other siblings died from hunger and disease. Due the harsh life of serfdom which their lord treated them like slaves, they escaped and hope to get a better life at the city. However, Chief Maid looks down on the sisters since their presence would bring trouble with the Crimson Scholar. Furthermore, she considers them "bugs" for allowing life harsh realities to control their fate rather than overcoming it and control their own lives as human beings and not thinking and planning their future. Upon asking the Chief Maid to teach them to become proper humans, they are taken unto her guard, working as assistant maids. Thanks to the education given to them, Big Sister Maid becomes knowledgeable about the different lives and social classes of human society while Little Sister Maid becomes an expert with food and drinks. Contrary to the knowledge of Hero and the others, they do not know the Crimson Scholar's secret.
