Lan Di is the principal antagonist in both Shenmue and its sequel Shenmue II. Lan Di kills Iwao Hazuki, Ryo's father, at the beginning of Shenmue. He blames Iwao for the death of Sun Ming Zhao (his father), and takes a precious stone mirror engraved with a dragon design. This mirror is called the Dragon Mirror, and is one of a pair - the other being the Phoenix Mirror. Ryo swears revenge and chases after him, but almost always finds himself one step behind Lan Di. Ryo Hazuki is the main character in the story of Shenmue, and who the player plays as. He is an 18 year old Japanese teenager who lives in Yamanose in Yokosuka, Japan. He lives at the Hazuki Residence with his father, Ine-san, the live-in housekeeper and Fuku-san, a live-in student studying the Hazuki style of Jujitsu. Ryo has been taught in the Martial Arts by his father, Iwao, since he was young. All we know about his mother is that she died when Ryo was young. Birthday: 17/07/5008 A mysterious nobleman living in luxury, The Count approaches and befriends Albert in Luna as the first step in his plan of revenge against the people who once betrayed him. The Count's previous identity was Edmond Dantès, a sailor who worked for the Morrel family's shipping company. Edmond was imprisoned in the Château d'If on false charges, and it was there that he met Gankutsuou (known as The Ruler of the Cave in Animax's English adaptation). In exchange for the strength and means to gain revenge, he allowed the cold-blooded demon to possess him. Because of Gankutsuou, he is afflicted with an odd condition which causes his body to be crystalline, revealing his bones and internal organs.
Following the death of his father, Afro is found and taken in by the master of a Sword School. As he comes to understand Afro’s dark past, Sword Master attempts to dissuade the boy from pursuing his father’s killer and to live a normal life, creating a conflict that only serves to push Afro further along the path to vengeance.
