After the Kyoto trip in volume 6, Negi begins training with her daily, where they share a master-student relationship. However, much like Asuna and Kaede, Ku Fei's skills as a fighter are far superior to her performance in Negi's class. She is known as Baka Yellow of the Baka Rangers, a title given to the five worst students in Negi's class. (Her bad results mainly stem from her inability to learn Japanese properly, often speaking in broken Japanese.) According to Ken Akamatsu, if Setsuna, Kaede, Mana and Kuu Fei (i.e. the "members" of the 3A Martial Arts Elite Four) were to fight without holding back, Kuu Fei would be the weakest among the four, though this is only because she uses no magic, but pure martial arts. In chapter 261, Ku Fei makes a Pactio with Negi, but only on the grounds that he beat her in an arm-wrestling match. At first he has difficulty doing so, but ends up winning in the end. She is the 10th student in Negi's class to form a Pactio with him. Her artifact is an extending pole, much like Son Goku's pole from "Journey to the West," and can also alter it's size and the speed of its extension.

She loves acting but dislikes her ad-libs as well as her own appearance (underdeveloped figure, unmanageable hair, and in the manga, freckles) because her body is not very 'mature'-looking. In the manga, she also has freckles, and a complex about them as well. This is made worse by being roommates with Ayaka Yukihiro and Chizuru, who both have mature bodies and bigger breasts. Kotar�, who is also staying with them, assumes the identity as her younger brother. Magister Negi Magi. She is student number twenty-one in Negi Springfield's class. Nagase is a practitioner of the Japanese martial art, ninjutsu. She trains in the mountains and is able to use a wide range of ninja abilities, such as creating clones. She has an easy-going attitude, and spends most of her time with her eyes nearly closed, a trait shared with Mitsune Konno, a character from Akamatsu's previous work, Love Hina. Only in special situations does she open one eye, and in some cases both eyes. She is also the blue Baka Ranger, which in the anime is made up of 5 girls with the lowest grade averages in the class. She's very friendly and outgoing, but not very smart: she's one of the Baka Rangers (a name given to the five worst students in Negi's class), Baka Pink. A minor character in the beginning of the series, Makie's role is slightly expanded on later on in the manga, where she finds herself having a small crush on Negi later in the series (mainly more so in her finding him cute than an actual crush). Despite her constant being around her teacher, though, she is unaware that he's a mage. In the Negima!? anime series her character is quite different. Although still cheerful and kind, she's now a form of comic relief; she's often made fun of and mocked by her roommate Ayaka. Despite this, though, the two get along somewhat well, sharing a dorm together even.

She and Asuna seem to hate each other, with the two often getting into fights, but it eventually becomes clear that they merely have an odd, but surprisingly close friendship that neither is willing to admit to. She is the girl most overtly fond of Negi, though she stands by the position that she is only interested in Negi because he "needs a mother figure". Though she is highly intelligent, she can often be clueless in relation to the events surrounding her.
