Youmu is one of the stranger entities in Gensokyo, part-human and part-ghost at the same time. Her two halves are not intermixed like one would expect from a cross-breed, but actually exist in physically separate bodies. Youmu has a straight-forward and focused personality, which complements her swordsmanship abilities well. However, her personality conflicts with that of her master, Yuyuko Saigyouji, who is very whimsical and playful in nature. Still, she serves Yuyuko as best as she can, tending to the gardens in Hakugyokurou and following her orders. Youmu commonly wields two blades at once, having studied some under her father, Youki. The longer blade, called Roukanken (Tower-Watching Sword) is said to be able to kill ten ghosts in one swipe; the shorter blade, Hakurouken (White Tower Sword), is able to cleave through a person's own confusion. However, not much is known about her particular style of swordsmanship, or her parents. What is known is that Youki, also a servant of Hakugyokurou, had begun training a very young Youmu when he suddenly disappeared one day, leaving her style incomplete. Hana Arai is the second main lead and deuteragonist of Hana to Alice: Satsujin Jiken. Alice ends up trespassing into Hana's house as she seemed to be part of the key to solving this "Juda" mystery. Hana is a far more observant and thought-out person to counteract Alice's propensity to jump into any situation without much thought, at the mercy of her own whimsical nature. This isn't to say that Hana herself isn't a whimsical person; she very much is, she just keeps herself in check most of the time. Where Alice is comparatively idealistic and childish, Hana is more than a tinge jaded, cynical and a tad bitter. Hana expresses most of her cynicism through deadpan humour; she is a deadpan snarker. As it turns out, Hana dropped a bee down Juda's shirt on a whim because she felt irritated with him, which ended up stinging him and giving him an anaphylactic attack. This event ironically scarred Hana more than Juda, as she isolates herself to her house for most of the time after said event. It's likely because of this experience that Hana decided to keep her whimsical nature in check and think things out a lot more thoroughly before doing them; she contents herself with sticking at the sidelines and observing things before making a move; she represses herself. It's through her interaction with Alice that she starts to rediscover a lot of her whimsical nature comes to light again. Alice pushes Hana forward again by forcing her to interact with Juda, as opposed to running away from her problems (i.e. Juda). Hana's relationship with Alice allows her to grow as a person and confront the things she was previously unable to face head-on; she gives Hana the strength that she can't summon on her own. This mischievous little guy doesn’t like anything but himself, and he doesn’t mind saying so. So good at being bad! (But a nice guy deep down?) In Japanese "badtz" (batsu) is a term for "X", the cross signifying a wrong answer. "Maru" means circle or "O", and signifies a correct answer. Thus, his name literally means "wrong-correct," and is frequently represented by "XO". Badtz-Maru has many different facial expressions and poses, but he is classically recognized for pulling one eye down and sticking out his tongue, a gesture akin to sticking out one's tongue. The characters for Yagokoro literally mean "Eight minds", and Eirin "Eternal jewel". A genius pharmacist who once lived on the moon. Kaguya persuaded her to produce the forbidden Hourai Elixir—the elixir of life—and consumed it. They were found out, and Kaguya alone was punished and was sent to the Earth, a fact which Eirin always felt guilty about. Sometime later, the moon court pardoned Kaguya's sins and summoned her back. Eirin and a handful of emissaries were sent to retrieve her, but Eirin found out that Kaguya didn't want to return to the moon. Acting out of her past guilt, Eirin betrayed and murdered all the other emissaries under the eyes of the earthlings who had fostered Kaguya. Eirin bribed the earthlings with the Hourai Elixir, in order to keep them silent, and went into hiding with Kaguya in Gensokyo.
Arika is the protagonist of the series My-Otome. She is first introduced in the first episode where she travels through the desert to Windbloom to find out more information about her mother, whom she was told was an Otome. After seeing the power of the 3rd Column, Shizuru, she decides to follow her mother and become an Otome. She is sometimes nicknamed Anty (Arinko-chan in Japanese) because her name, Arika, could be "蟻ã�‹" in Japanese, which means ant. The way her head turns into an ant's head is a way to show how she feels when someone calls her this nickname (which must have followed her all her life). She is cheerful and optimistic, but lacks the sophistication and "common sense" to deal with the royalty (due to her being a country bumpkin). She quickly gets acquainted with the other Corals and Pearls in Garderobe and becomes good friends with most of them, mainly Nina Wáng and Erstin Ho, her roommates. She eventually acquires her mother's old Meister GEM, the Blue Sky Sapphire (蒼天ã�®é�’玉 SÅ�ten no Seigyoku) and creates a contract with the current Queen of Wind Bloom, Mashiro. At first she is unable to release it's full potential, but in episode 25 she finally obtains the final Robe of her GEM, the Ultimate Blue Sky Robe, that her mother once wore. In Mai-Otome Zwei, she still retains the incomplete form of her Robe when materializing, but can call upon her final Robe at any time through Materialization Zwei, a power unique to Arika. Her Element takes the form of a crystal spear and is called the Blue Sky Spear. Her main Element attack is called Bolt from the Blue, and the ultimate form of her Element is the Sword of Akatsuki. Kino is the lead character in the story and is described as being around 15 years old with short black hair, large eyes and a fearless face. Kino usually wears a black jacket, brown overcoat, white shirt, goggled cap and wide belt with lots of pouches—using special gear depending on the weather or season as necessary. Kino travels with the motorrad, Hermes. The two have a contract—Kino provides the balance, Hermes provides the speed, and together they can travel anywhere they wish. Kino is an excellent marksman with deadly speed and accuracy, and is typically armed with two large-caliber pistols. On the journeys with Hermes, they both try and stay neutral to the situations they come across and avoid getting into other people's business. It is revealed in episode 4 of the anime and the final chapter of volume 1 of the light novel series that Kino is a female. Her name "Kino" is actually the name of the traveler who saved her as a child and caused her to take to her current lifestyle. Her actual birth name is left unstated throughout both the show and LN but there are implications in the anime that it is "Sakura."
