A fifteen year old prodigy, whose most prominent feature is his hair, often called "rooster hair" by his colleagues. Maruo Eiichirou is a diligent student and somewhat of a perfectionist. He earned his nickname "Ei-chan" because he keeps getting straight A's on his exams. Although an honor student, he lacks in exercise, and as a result, ends up joining the Southern Tennis Club (often abbreviated as STC). It is revealed later on in the manga that his mother was the one who suggested joining a tennis club. He starts off as a naive beginner who has trouble in trying to catch up and learn the basics. However, he soon paves his way against tougher opponents such as seeded players in prefecture tournaments. After learning he needs to improve for the upcoming hurdles he will have to face, he takes up the suggestion on flying to Florida in an attempt to improve his overall performance in tennis. Although he loses his practice matches in the first few days, he eventually improves and even beats Alex, a professional player who is included in the world's top 1000. He has romantic feelings for Takasaki Natsu or Natchan, as he calls her affectionately, his fellow club and schoolmate. Later on in the manga, they start going out.
Falkner's only anime appearance was in the episode Fighting Flyer with Fire. When Ash's Pikachu gets stolen by Team Rocket, Falkner arrives and rescues Pikachu with the help of his Pidgeot. He flies around on a glider, yearning to be as close to Flying Pokémon as he possibly can be. He is usually seen with his Hoothoot on his shoulder. Falkner has a self-righteous attitude when it comes to Pokémon training, which tends to anger Ash. Falkner also expresses an intense dislike for the prejudice against the Flying-types' weakness to Electric-types, but proves a slight hypocrisy as he criticizes Ash's poor choice of using Chikorita (weak to Flying-types) in their match. The Violet City Gym itself is a very tall, spiral-shaped building. Falkner has his matches on the roof of the Gym. Falkner has many students who chant in unison during his battles. Ash was able to win the Zephyr Badge, despite his Charizard's wing being severely injured during the match.

Hayato is scatterbrained, but because he gets the others out of many dangerous situations, he becomes a sort of mascot figure for the Tatara Army.
One of the members in the expedition for Nanakimura village. He apparently has a quiet personality and rarely interacts with anyone besides Mitsumune. When younger, Hayato decided to protect Mitsumune from getting bullied in school. Ever since, he gets angry whenever Mitsumune is about to do something inappropriate. He was abused by his parents who lived in a posh residential area. They didn't fit in with the neighbours, so they tried to show off their 'ideal' son. If Hayato did anything his parents disliked, he would get abused and thrown into the attic, where his grandmother was left to die.

Hamako Shihonmatsu is the animation director of Studio Petit. It is mentioned though that she once began with the post of an animator. Hamako is a high-class specialist. She may seem cold and unapproving at the first sight, but she is actually caring and warm-hearted. She was the one who gave Kuromi some useful tips and advices when Kuromi was in need. Hamako also feels responsibility towards the studio's product and wishes it to be at the highest level possible. She prefers not doing the work at all rather than doing it badly. Hamako is a heavy chainsmoker. However, she tries to quit as she sees smoking women as "not pretty".
