Salt and his younger brother Charles lost their parents five years before the beginning of the series in an accident on Christmas Day, which was when Salt promised Charles that he'd protect him no matter what. Charles lost the movement of one of his arms in the accident, which lead Salt to the decision of stealing so he could keep themselves alive. He hid this fact of his brother, knowing that he'd be upset about it, and kept on stealing with his friend and partner-in-crime Pierre. His thefts then led him to meet Rudolph and discover that he holds the power of Santa Claus, being that the reason why his eyes are silver. When Charles is attacked by a Cauchemar named Cornet, Salt finally makes a contract with Rudolph and become the twenty-ninth sucessor of Santa Claus. Seven years later and by the end of Holy Glory, he announces that his name is no longer Salt Lothrick, but Noel Christonbel, and continues to, along with his reindeer Rudolph, exert the duty of Santa Claus by delivering presents to children on Christmas Day, as seen in Noel La Neige.
Rudolph the Reindeer is a candy addicted and one of the nine Reindeers fighting under the Grand Santa Claus' commands in order to defeat Cauchemar, which, being the personification of the pain and sadness felt by the souls of humans who have suffered and committed suicide, attack human children whose souls are still pure. However, after 200 years of performing this duty, the Grand Santa Claus, Klaus-sama, had reached his limit and was about to die, and so he inserted his own powers into a snowflake and released it all over the world, in the search for new vessels and sucessors. Each of the nine Reindeers were then given the mission of going out on a journey in order to find these sucessors and continue to fight the Cauchemar. While in the search for the person in whom the crystal dwelled, Rudolph went to London and met Salt, explaining him that his eyes had become silver thanks to the Santa Claus' snowflake that had entered his body and then acknowledging him as the ninth sucessor of the Santa Claus. After the contract between them was finally made, time kept on passing by and both of them continued to fight the Cauchemar, as seen in Noel La Neige.

Meryl Stryfe and her junior co-worker Milly were sent by the Bernardelli Insurance Society to evaluate claims regarding Vash the Stampede. Despite her serious attitude and short temper, she is a good person. Although she doesn't often fight alongside Vash, she hides many derringer-style "throwaway" pistols under her coat. She once referred to herself as "Derringer Meryl." Initially, she finds Vash to be a nuisance and dismisses the idea that he is the legendary Humanoid Typhoon. As time passes, she realizes that Vash isn't the villain that he is made out to be nor the buffoon that he presents himself to be. Gradually, she comes to respect Vash and love him deeply. It is also hinted near the end of the anime that she may possibly be the reincarnation of Rem Saverem. This, however, is not present in the manga, and may have been an independent decision by the producers of the anime. Another source of this belief is through the construction of her name, where as Meryl = Mer-yl = Rem It is hinted that Meryl has problems involving her family. Holly Mad-thane is the nine-year-old daughter of Duke and Lady Mad-thane. She asks Claus and Lavie to deliver her message (in addition to her mother's) to her father, who she fears will not return home from the battle at Minagith. After her message is broadcast aboard the Claimh Solais by Claus and Lavie, her father decides to hide his shame and retreat from the losing battle.
