A youkai man dispatched by Gyokumen Koushu to defeat the Sanzo Ikkou. He holds youkai power in his characteristic eyes, and corners his enemies with his hypnotic words. On top of wearing strange, no good clothes (his pants are leather, just to let you know), speaking hopelessly dramatically, and talking to himself a lot, he has no sense of direction and no redeeming qualities. He’s a character to love. His skillful hypnosis was broken by Sanzo and the others. But he’s good at running, at least. Source: Saiyuki.wikia
Gat or Gato is a character in Saiyuki Reload that started appearing at "Even a Worm Arc". His full name is Gaty Nene Hawk, as seen on volume 9, chapter 43 of Saiyuki Reload. Background Hazel's large bodyguard/traveling companion, he wields two pistols. He fights recklessly for Hazel because he can be instantly brought back to life or healed as long as Hazel has a soul stored in his pendant or there is a corpse nearby to take a soul from. His past is largely unknown except that he met Hazel several years before, was injured by him, but spared. He believes that being with and protecting Hazel is his destiny. He appears to be of Native American descent, and doesn't require sleep. He is said by Ukoku Sanzo to have been a young man of a tribe that worships nature. When the demons they had forged peace with attacked, Hazel tried to help. Gato originally opposed him and became the first human Hazel had ever mistakenly killed. He immediately was brought back, but his tribe saw him as an abomination against nature and shunned him. A man from the Eastern continent, he visited Shangri-la with Hazel. He is a dead man brought back to life by Hazel's reanimation technique; the perfectionist Hazel is his world; he was a "human", but at this point in time he can't elaborate on that experience. He travels with Hazel as the man's bodyguard, and takes Hazel's commands as absolute. He has a huge body over two meters tall, strong arms, and quick movements. He defeats youkai with his pair of highly accurate handguns, and will sacrifice his own body to protect Hazel. When he loses his life in battle doing so, he is revived by Hazel's reanimation technique. Personality He has the yellow eyes specific to those who have been reanimated, and the scar on his forehead remains that was given to him by Hazel during life. He doesn't require sleep or food, or anything else related to living. He is extremely silent and expressionless, but his is a pacifist and has a good-natured heart. He thinks of Goku, who nonchalantly connected with him, as a friend, apparently. Difference Between Anime And Manga In the Reloaded Gunlock anime, Gat's origin is different. He lived in a native tribe (not stated where) that worshiped a being they called the Great Spirit. A group of hunters eventually came and started killing a large amount of the wildlife. Gat and his tribe tried to stop the hunters but were powerless against their guns. Gat, fatally wounded by a bullet, is revived by the Great Spirit and kills the hunters. He is then taken to Europe where Hazel is killing numerous demons and under the Great Spirit's orders reluctantly kills him (since Hazel was just a boy). Guilty of his actions, Gat asks the Great Spirit to revive Hazel with his life, which the Great Spirit does so, giving Hazel's mirror the ability to revive humans with youkai souls. Gat willing goes along with the charade the Great Spirit created until the finale of the series, where he decides to fight the Sanzo party without Hazel using any souls to revive him. As a result, they kill Gat, but before he dies he reveals the truth about Hazel's memories being altered. (Source: Saiyuki.wikia)
Hazel is a character in Saiyuki Reload that started appearing at "Even a Worm Arc". Background He's a foreigner from the rich Western continent who crossed an ocean to visit Shangri-la. His dress is that of the church, but in actuality he follows in the footsteps of the man who was both father and "master" to him, and exterminates monsters. When he was a child, his master was killed by monsters, so he now holds in his heart a persistent need for revenge and a sense of hatred. He heard the story of Shangri-la from Ukoku, whom he met in the past. Knowing that Shangri-la is now under the rule of youkai, he traveled there with his bodyguard Gat in order to send all youkai into extinction. Abilities He has a special revival technique through which he can replace souls. He uses the souls of the youkai he's defeated to revive those humans who died by youkai-inflicted wounds. It is currently unknown as to where and when he gained that ability. He has lost one portion of his childhood memories. Personality He is a beautiful young man with silver hair, blues eyes, and a neutral countenance, and he speaks elaborately with the intonation specific to those of the Western continent. At first glance he is elegant and soft-mannered, but is rather self-confident and is good at rubbing people the wrong way. In actuality he is an intellectual, with both sharp intelligence and high physical capabilities. He is affectionate towards Sanzo but with the other three youkai, especially with Hakkai, he has a secret cat-and-dog relation. Difference Between Anime And Manga In the Reloaded Gunlock anime, Hazel has a different origin. He would often kill youkai, and was eventually punished for it by being turned into one himself, which resulted in him killing the priest who raised him. He continued killing youkai but was eventually killed by Gato, under the orders of the Great Spirit. However, Gato feels sorry for Hazel, so he then chooses to revive him by sharing his own life energy, which also gives Hazel's mirror the power to revive dead humans with youkai souls (in the anime, the mirror appears to be able to hold an infinite number of souls). However, Hazel's memories become altered to make him believe that he was the one who killed and revived Gato instead . In the finale of the series, Hazel attempts to kill Sanzo and revive him, in order to get Sanzo to join him in wiping out all demons, but Goyjo, Hakkai and Goku intervene and Gato is fatally injured in the ensuing battle. Before dying, he reveals the truth to Hazel, resulting in Hazel regaining his own true memories. Hazel is then defeated in his youkai form by the Sanzo party, and feeling that he has wasted his life, then asks Sanzo to kill him. Sanzo complies with his request, though before shooting Hazel he comforts him somewhat by telling him that nobody wastes their life. (Source: Saiyuki wikia)
