Shortly after fleeing from her captors after arriving in Kou, Youko Nakajima sneaks into Takki's house and attempts to rob her. Takki takes pity on Youko, explaining a number of general things about the Twelve Kingdoms to Youko. Seeing as Youko is stranded, Takki offers Youko in Kasai, where her mother works. Because of Takki's seeming kindness, Youko accepts. However, upon arriving in Kasai, Youko overhears that Takki's true intention is to sell Youko to Takki's mother, the mistress of a brothel, as a slave. Realizing that Takki is not to be trusted, Youko flees. In the anime, Takki's role is largely the same and she first appears in the third episode. Like in the novel, Youko attempts to rob Takki's house, although she is accompanied by her classmates Yuka Sugimoto and Ikuya Asano. Takki takes pity on all three of them, offering clothing, food, and shelter, and then offers the two girls a job in town, though once again, her intention is to sell the two girls as slaves. Renrin is the Kirin of the kingdom of Ren. She is described as a cheerful young woman appearing about eighteen years of age. In contrast to her master, she is very proper and refined. In Renrin's first appearance in the series, she is requested by Lady Gyokuyo of the sages of Mount Hou to lend them the use of the royal treasure of Ren, a bracelet called the gogoukanda. Because gogoukanda can open a portal to Hourai without causing a shoku, it is instrumental in bringing Taiki back the Twelve Kingdoms. Because of her role in bringing Taiki back to the Twelve Kingdoms, Gyousou sends Taiki to Ren on a diplomatic visit to thank her. Both Renrin and her king, Seitaku take a liking to Taiki, though instability in their own kingdom leaves them very few opportunities to see Taiki or any of the other kingdoms. Seishuu is a young boy with failing eyesight who winds up travelling with Suzu. He lost both of his parents to youma. Seishuu originally came from Kei, but when Jokaku ordered the exile of all the women in the kingdom, his family decided to leave. His father was unfortunately attacked and killed by a youma, devoured by a demon right before Seishuu's eyes, while Seishuu was injured from a concussion to the back of his head. The injury gradually grows worse and is the source of seizures and his failing eyesight. Seishuu and his mother eventually made their way to Sou and then Sai, but his mother passed away from illness before they can return to Kei. When the new ruler ascended the throne of Kei, Seishuu elects to return and encounters Suzu making her way to Kei by boat. He and Suzu initially do not get along, since he openly points out that Suzu, despite her difficult life, made no actual effort to try to change those circumstances and only moped about how unfortuate she was. However, they gradually grow on one another and become friends. During their voyage, it becomes apparent that Seishuu's health is failing and Suzu becomes convinced that they must go to Gyouten and meet with the monarch of Kei, who Suzu believes can heal Seishuu. However, they are seperated in Shisui Prefecture in Wa Province, where Seishuu is deliberately run over by the carriage of the prefecture's praetor, Shoukou, for collasping in the carriage's path. Kyouki is the current kirin of the kingdom of Kyou. His master is Shushou. Notably, he remained on Mount Hou for twenty-eight years before choosing Shushou to be the new ruler of Kyou. In contrast to other kirin, he is physically large and not slender. Though kirin are known to be benevolent by nature, Kyouki is often criticized by Shushou for being overly sympathetic, especially for people she deems to be unworthy of sympathy, such as Shoukei. While he often questions Shushou's decisions, she responds with logical explanations behind her actions. Shushou also does not hesitate to slap Kyouki for sympathetic tendencies, remarking only that his greater height makes it difficult for her to physically reprimand him. (Source: wikia)
Keiki is a kirin and the Saiho of Kei. He contacted Youko in Japan and brought her to the Twelve Kingdoms, though they were separated. Soon afterwards, he fell under a spell from Kou's Saiho, and was forced to appear in front of a pretender to the throne of Kei. Like all Kirin, Keiki abhors violence and prefers peaceful resolutions. Keiki appears as a very quiet and unemotional type, however does have caring qualities, especially seen towards the kirin Taiki. (Source: Wikipedia)
Thirteen for thirty years while her father was King of Hou, her name was Sonshou but she was called Shoukei. She lived like a spoiled brat in the palace because her father would never let her out into the kingdom. When her father was overthrown by Gekkei, her mother and Hourin (kirin) were killed before her eyes. She was then removed from the registry of immortals and forced to live out her life in a rike in Gekkei's Kei province. Three years later, she looked nothing like the over-dressed princess and felt even more bitter. She blamed everyone else for her misfortune and never once tried to understand anyone else's perspective. She considered Gekkei a usurper who wanted nothing but the throne and was unjust in his taking it. She couldn't understand why anyone would praise him for his actions, especially since she believed he was living lavishly in a palace while she was forced to suffer. When her identity was revealed to those living in the rike, they attempted to kill her. Only the old matron had enough self-restraint to run to Gekkei's palace and have someone sent to remove Shoukei in order to save her life. Gekkei then exiled Shoukei to the kingdom of Kyou where she was allowed to stay in the royal palace on the condition that she work as a servant. She would not be made into a Sen-nin, though, because the queen thought she had too much pride. Shoukei agreed to stay but she hated it. Working as a servant meant she had to bow. So she stole treasures and escaped to Ryuu. She heard there that a person could get land and citizenship without a pass if they came from Tai. Thinking this would be a great way for her to get close to Youko, she decided she'd go to Tai and then to Kei. Before this plan could come to fruition, she was arrested and spent a night in jail with Rakushun. He slowly came to gain her trust and show how spoiled and self-indulgent she had been throughout her life. By the time Shoukei reached Kei, she was a better person. She wanted to get to Youko not to hurt her, but to tell her what would happen if she lost her way. She unknowingly met Youko in the Wa Province when she threw a rock at a soldier during a public execution. From there she met up with the rebel group who want to overthrow Gahou, the evil lord of the province. While on assignment to pick up touki weapons, she stayed with Suzu. The two of them share information about the rebellions. Shoukei assured Suzu that Youko was a good person and would have done all she could to help Seishuu. Now completely reformed, Shoukei had learned to empathize with other people. She was appointed courtier by Youko. A little girl who makes and sells candies. Youko denies an offer to eat lunch with the girl and her family. In the novels, she and her mother make a very brief appearance in The Twelve Kingdoms: Sea of Shadow, where she is referred to as Kuyo. She and her mother find Youko on the road in a forest in Kou. Noticing that Youko is exhausted and near collaspe, Kuyo offers sugar water to Youko to help rehydrate her. However, Youko rebuffs the efforts of the mother and daughter for her to travel with them into a town for the night, as Youko is unable to trust others after being betrayed so many times. When Youko meets them again enroute to En, Kuyo inquires after Youko's health, noting that her mother had told her that Youko had been grumpy because she had been tired. Youko thanks Kuyo and her mother for their kindness before parting ways with them, as she tries to find Rakushun. In the anime, Gyokuyo's role is expanded alongside her mother's role.
