Age: 13 Kouta is a freshman middle school student and the protagonist to the series. He's a normal guy who's in an age where he starts to be interested in girls but gets mad as soon people call him a kid because of his size. He thinks that he's more of an adult than Natsuki but easily gets embarrassed when she's around him. He soon falls in love with Natsuki, but thinks he is actually in love with Kanade and not Natsuki which makes him take a lot of time to notice his true feelings until Chiaki points it out. He starts feeling too much conscious about his feelings and ignores Natsuki for a short time. Later when Natsuki's older sister comes to his house to take her back and make her some old man's wife, he admits that he loves Natsuki. Later when he was about to transfer he confesses to Natsuki. Natsuki kisses him and tells him that after he has grown up and if his feelings hasn't changed then to tell it again. In the Epilogue, 4 years has passed and Kouta returns to the house he used to stay. He again meets Natsuki in the same place where he met her first and she asks him to give his ice cream which he was eating.

Kanbei is a gambler who could read luck with his right eye. A legendary 'charisma' gambler, he is also known as ��よ���ん�� tsukiyomi no kanbee, tsukiyomi meaning "(luck) easily attaches". He is first encountered by Gintoki and Hasegawa during their losing streak. After discovering that the legendary gambler is cheating, the three are taken prisoner by Kujaku Hime and told to play Mahjong against one of her players. During the match their opponent asks if Kanbei could really read luck to which he recalls the incident in which his eye was damaged. He had to cut his luck-reading right eye deliberately in order to rescue a friend who was held hostage.

Kamui firmly believes that the Yato are to remain on the battlefield and shows his disapproval of Housen staying locked up in Yoshiwara. He tried to revive the abandoned tradition of Yato clan's men killing their own parent to prove their strength, although failed to successfully execute it and only cut his father's arm off. Despite this, he pays respect to the opponents he kills by sending them off with a smile. He doesn't kill children, and dislikes killing women because they may give birth to strong children.

He fought many wars and is a very skilled swordsman. One of many nicknames of him is "All Under Heaven".
Miki's best male friend and a member of the Toryo tennis team. Miki has had a crush on him since junior high and once confessed her feelings to Ginta in a note. However, the note was found by Ginta's classmates, and Ginta downplayed it although he also felt the same way about Miki, without knowing at the time that she was watching. Although he did find out that Miki had witnessed his denial of any interest in her, he was unable to tell her how he really felt until high school. The romantic tension between them comes to a head with Yuu's appearance, which makes them realize that they still have feelings for each other. He decides to go along with Yuu's ex-girlfriend Arimi's proposal that they pose as a couple in order to drive a wedge between Miki and Yuu.
