Amiboshi (亢宿?) is a Seiryū Celestial Warrior. He is the elder twin brother of Suboshi and was born in Tenry�, San'un Province in Kut� Empire. The true name is K�toku Bu (武 亢德, Bu Koutoku?), born under the star Neck (亢). As a Celestial Warrior, Amiboshi is capable of emitting chi through his mouth and channel it through a flute to control the will of others. A skilled flute player, Amiboshi holds the instrument to the left when using his powers, but to the right when he is simply playing the flute. He works as a spy. Tranquil and reserved, Amiboshi can become single-minded and merciless. Before Miaka arrives in The Universe of Four Gods, he was a kind young man who was determined to judiciously protect his younger brother. Amiboshi first appears while impersonating Chiriko at the orders of Nakago. When discovered, he falls into a river and is believed to be dead. Found by an old couple, Amiboshi pretends that he has amnesia and the couple adopt him as a son, calling him Kaika. He saves Miaka while she is searching for the Shinzah�, but he pretends that he does not recognize her. As the story progresses, he gradually becomes conflicted between aiding the Celestial Warriors of Suzaku and those of Seiryū. To save his life, Suboshi gives Amiboshi the forgetfulness potion (through a kiss) instead after Amiboshi nearly dies in order to save his life and protect his future. Losing his memory forever, Amiboshi is protected from sharing the same fate as the rest of the Seiryū warriors and becomes the only surviving member the Celestial Warriors of Seiryū. When Suboshi dies by his own weapon in Miaka's world, after following Tamahome, Amiboshi claimed that he felt like a part of him had disappeared. Sh�ka, the daughter of the local nobleman and Mitsukakes fiancee . She died because of ilness and that sent Mitsukake into deep depression.

Hiromi is a teenage girl from an all-girl school who meets Hideo in the 'Sea of Trees' at the base of Mount Fuji. As first, she mistakes him for someone contemplating suicide and comforts him, after which the two become close friends. She has a boyfriend who she simply acknowledges as Shinji, though she hasn't seen him since the outbreak. Later, she is infected by a zombie baby but still retains most of her personality. However, at times she starts to see the world as some sort of child-like vision, viewing people as off-putting stuffed animals. After being infected, her strength increases substantially. During their refuge at the Outlet Mall, Hiromi is shot in the head by a nail gun. Afterwards, Oda is able to use her knowledge as a nurse to remove the nail and Hiromi surprisingly makes a complete recovery, from both being shot and her infection. She loses all the superficial symptoms of her infection, such as protruding black veins and bloodshot eyes, but retains much of her superhuman strength.

Mayo is the protagonist in the series. She is a sixteen-year-old girl who attends Yotsubadai High School and is a member of the Basketball Club. When she was in the eighth grade, she saw Taka working in the ice cream parlor and fell in love instantly. Taka is unaware of her feelings towards him. He only had eyes for Miaka, therefore Mayo's first true love was never realized. As her life falls apart around her - Taka's marriage to Miaka and the impending divorce of her parents - Mayo enters into "The Universe of the Four Gods" to attain a storybook ending with Taka.
