Kino is the lead character in the story and is described as being around 15 years old with short black hair, large eyes and a fearless face. Kino usually wears a black jacket, brown overcoat, white shirt, goggled cap and wide belt with lots of pouches—using special gear depending on the weather or season as necessary. Kino travels with the motorrad, Hermes. The two have a contract—Kino provides the balance, Hermes provides the speed, and together they can travel anywhere they wish. Kino is an excellent marksman with deadly speed and accuracy, and is typically armed with two large-caliber pistols. On the journeys with Hermes, they both try and stay neutral to the situations they come across and avoid getting into other people's business. It is revealed in episode 4 of the anime and the final chapter of volume 1 of the light novel series that Kino is a female. Her name "Kino" is actually the name of the traveler who saved her as a child and caused her to take to her current lifestyle. Her actual birth name is left unstated throughout both the show and LN but there are implications in the anime that it is "Sakura."

Her surname is usually the target of nickname making (which Madoka does not like) from her classmates. During the school festival, she develops a small crush on the teenage form of Kotarou. She has been shown to be very protective of her friends, and especially for Ako, whom she encourages to be more confident. Ironically, she almost got Ako shot when she pressed the shy girl to confess her love for "Nagi" (teenage Negi) in front of an audience during the Live Mahora Concert. Luckily for Ako, and much to Madoka's consternation, she only asked for Nagi's e-mail address. Madoka also takes part in the "Mars vs. Mages" game and is among the first "casualties" (meaning her clothes were blasted off), when she is hit by the robots' strip beams.

Even though she is very nice, she can be sometimes be equally scary. Shortly after Golden Week, she found an injured dog on the side of the road. She took the dog in, which turned out to be a young half-demon boy named Kotaro Inugami, who had come to Mahora looking for Negi. Unfortunately, Graf Herrman, a powerful demon, attacked Kotaro, and kidnapped Chizuru when she stood up to him. She all but adopts Kotaro after Negi and Kotaro defeat Graf Hermann, and gets him to live in their dorm under the identity of Natsumi's younger brother. Chizuru is extremely courageous, as shown in her encounter and fight with Graf Hermann, where she calmly confronted him for his intrusion and even slapped him when he was about to petrify Kotaro. While Chizuru stays out of the fighting during the mock-battle at the festival, she does take part in the search for Chao late in the conflict, and wins a gift pack for finding her (which she promptly intimidates Kotaro and Natsumi into not disclosing). Her roommates are Ayaka, Natsumi, and Kotaro. Chizuru has the largest breasts in the class. In the Volume 8 character notes and the Negima Workshop, Ken Akamatsu mentions that Chizuru and Mutsumi Otohime from his earlier work, Love Hina, are very similar.
Sheltis is the main character of the light novel 'Hyouketsu Kyoukai no Eden'. At the start of the first volume he is described as a 14-15 year old boy with tea-colored hair, which almost looks like purple, and an androgynous face. Though that is the case, most of the novel takes place 3 years after when Sheltis is seventeen. He is known to wear the old ceremonial clothes of Tenketsu Palace despite the new uniform being white. He used to live in Tenketsu Palace of the Floating Continent with his childhood friend Ymy, but was later banished from the tower after an incident where he fell into the Garden of Corrupted Song and his body's spiritual power (Shinryoku) was replaced with the opposite force (Mateki). This occurred during a mission and not many people knew about, as it would cause an uproar if a person who possessed Mateki was known. Due to this, Sheltis was forced to live in the Living Sector for three year and worked at a cafe with a girl called Eyriey and a child named Yuto. During Sheltis's time in Tenketsu Palace, he was a high ranking guard whom astounded many people with his fighting abilities. His goal in becoming a guard was to protect Ymy as her Sennenshi, who wanted to become a priestess. He wields Dual Swords coated in Shinryoku due to his inability to use a Great Sword. His swords became a purple color after gaining Mateki and often spars with his other friend Leon. After a series of events, Sheltis regains the permission to go back to Tenketsu Palace but all data of his previous status was lost, causing him to start from cadet guard and have to work his way back in the ranks without people knowing about his Mateki. Sheltis's mateki is said to be quite strong as it is able to cause with Ymy's Shinryoku. It is also said that he fell to one of the lowest floors of the Garden of Corrupted Song , as he knows the song that can only be heard in those areas, though he does not have much of a recollection of his time there.
