During the invasion of Trost in the year 850, he was part of the squad including Jean and Mikasa whose Maneuvering Gears start to run out of propulsion fuel. As his fuel finally depletes he becomes surrounded by a group of Titans and is killed. Jean, who was in charge of the squad, capitalized on the opportunity and used him as bait to distract the Titans while the rest of the squad made their way back to the Headquarters to resupply.
