Takeshi is known as "Brock" in the English Pokémon series. He is the former gym leader of Nibi (Pewter) City who gives up his position to travel with Satoshi (Ash) and Kasumi (Misty) on their journey to catch Pokémon. He aspires to become a top class breeder. He has a weakness for pretty girls and ends up either getting dragged away by Kasumi, Max or stabbed by his Croagunk. At the end of Diamond and Pearl, he's decided to part ways from Dawn and Ash to become a Pokemon Doctor.

Dawn is a 10 year old girl who has just started her Pokémon journey. Her mother once won the Grand Festival, and Dawn has her heart set on following in her mother's footsteps and aims to be a great Coordinator. She befriended her starter Piplup while searching for a Chimchar that escaped from Professor Rowan's lab. Shortly afterward, she met up with Ash after finding Pikachu, who was on the run from Team Rocket. Dawn decided to join Ash on his journey through Sinnoh. She immediately regrets it, and tells Ootani to pretend it never happened, but in spite of herself she tells Ootani once again that she likes him.
