Joshua is Ray's brother and is talkative, upbeat and sociable. Though he deeply cares for Ray, he is entirely different in behaviour than his older brother. Joshua claims his brother changed to his present behaviour after his wife, Yoshimo's, death at the hands of the Claw Man, and although he also loved Yoshimo, he wishes for Ray to accept her death and return home instead of exating his avenge on her killer. Joshua has great technical skills, being able to repair numerous everyday items, analyze armor weaknesses, and even set up timed explosives. He matures rapidly after Ray's death, cutting off the connection between the claw's armor and the planet destroyer system. After The Claw's death, Joshua helps Van with finding a new orbital port for DANN. He tell Van that he and Yukiko are going to search for Volkain's remains, even though it might take many years. A 3rd generation city employee, who works at the city welfare department, he is assigned at the 1st section that issues nursing certifications. He claims to be good at almost everything and he is quite a charmer that he is able to get email addresses from pretty clients, even boast it to his superior, Taishi. Though, a slacker he wouldn't hesitate to go out of his way to help out Yamagami and Saya when they're having trouble dealing with difficult clients. He always teases Yamagami that he would find himself earning her ire. He is also good in ventriloquism and is fluent in sign language, despite only learning it recently. He ends up falling in love with Lucy and after confessing to her after finally getting her to believe he was serious they start dating. It is his father that okayed Lucy's name. Unlike in the anime in the manga she doesn't find out until she overhears Hasebe's father telling the chief he was the one who okayed it right when Hasebe was about to finally tell her after having chickened out previously doing it. Not entirely human in appearance, Fern had very few friends growing up. He eventually became assigned to Sylthfarn as a body double (if someone used a harmful spell on Sylthfarn, it would transfer to Fern). Sylthfarn eventually convinced Fern they should be friends, and Fern was deeply hurt when Sylthfarn disappeared with word. Fern tends to be brash, rude, and sarcastic to those he doesn't know, but he is extremely loyal the people he cares about.
