She's very friendly and outgoing, but not very smart: she's one of the Baka Rangers (a name given to the five worst students in Negi's class), Baka Pink. A minor character in the beginning of the series, Makie's role is slightly expanded on later on in the manga, where she finds herself having a small crush on Negi later in the series (mainly more so in her finding him cute than an actual crush). Despite her constant being around her teacher, though, she is unaware that he's a mage. In the Negima!? anime series her character is quite different. Although still cheerful and kind, she's now a form of comic relief; she's often made fun of and mocked by her roommate Ayaka. Despite this, though, the two get along somewhat well, sharing a dorm together even.

She and Asuna seem to hate each other, with the two often getting into fights, but it eventually becomes clear that they merely have an odd, but surprisingly close friendship that neither is willing to admit to. She is the girl most overtly fond of Negi, though she stands by the position that she is only interested in Negi because he "needs a mother figure". Though she is highly intelligent, she can often be clueless in relation to the events surrounding her. Toua is a successful gambler, and a pitcher in the game One Outs. After losing a game of One Outs for the first time , he joins the Lycaons with an odd contract, the One Outs contract, that decides Toua's pay based on his performance. As the Lycaons' famed star pitcher, he can pitch entire games without giving up a single hit. Later on in the story, Tokuchi purchases the Lycaons club and implements many of his own rules in order to win the championship. Major manga spoiler (ending): After Lycaons win the championship, Tokuchi is relieved of his promise which he made to Kojima at the start of the series (which was to join Lycaons and help them win the championship).
