He is a major celebrity in the area around Petalburg, and his skill is reputed to approach the level of an Elite Four member. He uses a high-level Slaking to accompany his powerful Vigoroth. His undefeated streak ends when he battles Ash, who wins his fifth gym battle. However, Max, depressed at seeing his father lose, snatches the badge just as Norman was giving it to Ash and runs away with it. Ash, May, and Norman manage to make him see that losing is as important as winning, and Max gives back the badge.

Maachi's "older brother". He takes care of his looks and movements in public to hide the secret that he is a major okatu. Riichi's room is filled with manga, posters and figurines. He sometimes falls asleep while chatting online. He also cares for Maachi as a sister. He is later married to Maachi

Mei is also a major otaku. If her parents ever found out, they would surely throw everything (manga, posters, etc.) away. Her brother told her to hide the fact that she was an otaku from everyone so that she wouldn't get stereotyped. When she met Riichi, she and him talked and got together with Maachi at his house. She only likes girls.
