In the anime and manga Saiyuki, Yaone is the youkai prince Kougaiji's alchemist. Background She was the daughter of an alchemist, but was selected by the woman-eater Hyakuganmaoh. She was saved from this fate by Kougaiji, and has since sworn her life to his service. She also takes the role of 'babysitter' of Kougaiji's sister Lirin. Weapons and Abilities Her weapon of choice is a short spear, explosives and various poisons. In volume two of the manga, she attempts to eliminate the Sanzo Ikkou, first by poisoning their food, then gassing them. Her main fighting opponent is Hakkai, who is much similar to her in terms of personality, calm and collected. Curiously, she somewhat reminded Hakkai as his deceased lover Kanan. Also, both are sometimes seen fighting alongside each other, instead of against, also with the whole Sanzo Ikkou. However, she made it clear that she's completely devoted to Kougaiji. The Dragon King of the Western Ocean. Sole person responsible for Heaven's Western Army, Tenpou and Kenren's superior officer. He's strict about discipline as an army officer should be and undoubtedly takes heaven's orders as absolute. He discards excess things and is very punctual. He values Tenpou highly, and from early on, he rescued Goku and the others, who had begun to associate with Tenpou at some point, from danger. He got caught up in the fours' rebellion, and even though he didn't understand their thinking, he saw their paths with his own eyes. He has two horns growing from his silver hair. Scales dot his porcelain skin, and his eyes are red and gold. His strange appearance is closer to that of a youkai than a god. (Source: Saiyuki Wikia)
Nataku only appears in Saiyuki Gaiden and in the anime Saiyuki, episode called "War Prince Nataku". Nataku is based on the Taoist deity Nezha. He is a half-mortal war god who won the then-divine Goku's friendship. Unfortunately, Nataku falls into a catactonic state (the reasons for this are not disclosed in the anime) and sits in the divine garden of heaven with only the Goddess of Mercy to keep him company staring blankly ahead for all time. In the series, Nataku is decidedly more somber than Goku and is resigned to being a puppet (he was 'given the honor' of being the War prince, a role which is later passed onto Homura) to the Gods. Furthermore, Nataku goes by a different title, but his background is still very much the same - right down to a Commander father and spear weapon. (However, it is glaringly obvious as the series goes on that the Commander is exploiting his son for fame and recognition from the Gods, reversing the roles that Nataku is to blame for misfortune) Nataku's father however, is then lectured by Field Marshal Tenpou (the past reincarnation of Cho Hakkai) and further mistreatment of his son is then yet to be seen in the series.
Kenren Taishou is Sha Gojyo's previous incarnation. General of Heaven's Western Army. A lawless man who loves saké, flowers, and women. He's an infamous commander who used to be a general in the Eastern army, but he was demoted for sleeping with his commander's wife, and became Field Marshal Tenpou's subordinate. He's a bold wanderer overflowing with chivalry but also has a meddling, common-sensed face. He's a good older brother-type person, especially to children and his subordinates. He's been called Tenpou's husband, but he's actually more of a housewife, supporting Tenpou, who wouldn't be able to handle daily life if left to his own devices. He doubted the absolute principle policies of heaven from before. He is attracted by the lower world's art and the beauty of living things, and while he's a military man in heaven's army, he becomes involved with Goku. He has short black hair and black eyes, a sarcastic mouth, and a big, childlike smile. That look resembles Sha Gojyo somehow. He loves lower world luxury items like cigarettes. Since acquiring these goods is difficult, he smokes several brands. Kenren is shown using guns in his missions. (Source: Saiyuki Wikia)
Age: 22 Birthday: November 9 Sign: Scorpio Blood Type: B Height: 184 cm (6' 0") Weight: 75.3 kg (166 lbs.) Hair: Red Eyes: Scarlet Hobbies: Smoking, playing card games, flirting with women, picking on Goku Dislikes: Weak people, water, seeing women cry This fiery redhead is a man who loves to gamble and is fond of women looking for a good time. He is often teased by Goku and Sanzo due to his lecherous behavior. However, he is a loyal and reliable friend who has a soft spot for women in danger who are in need of help. He is a half-demon, which granted him his red hair and exotic red eyes. His weapon in battle is a jakujou [a staff with a crescent-moon shaped blade attached to the end by a chain that can be elongated]. Backstory When he was a boy, Gojyo lived in a rather unhappy home. His demon father had had an affair with a human. His father later dumped his illegitimate child on his demon wife before abandoning her. His stepmother is the only mother that Gojyo ever knew. She often took out her frustrations on Gojyo, physically and mentally abusing him while weeping for herself and her situation. Gojyo's demon older brother Jien would often try to protect Gojyo from his mother's rage. No matter how hard Gojyo tried, he was unable to win his mother's affection, and was tormented as much by the sight of her tears as he was by the fact that she professed love solely for his older brother. One day, Gojyo's mother had reached her limits, and attempted to kill Gojyo, first scarring the side of his face with her claws, then attempting to strangle him. Gojyo was saved by his older brother Jien, who tearfully killed his mother before fleeing, leaving Gojyo alone. Gojyo later made his way in the world by first being involved in shady activity with his friend Banri before mastering gambling at cards. He survived the loneliness of the nights by bedding loose women. He used to despise his red hair, since it represented the things that his mother had hated about him. One night on his way back from a bar, Gojyo came upon the bleeding form of Cho Gonou. He soon took the unconscious man back to his home and nursed him back to health. He was the first one that Gonou confessed his crimes to, bonding with the troubled newly-born demon over their different yet shared pain. Gojyo tried to protect Gonou from Sanzo when the monk came to bring Gonou back with him for judgment. After Gonou left with Sanzo, who later informed him that Gonou had 'died,' Gojyo cut off his long locks as a sign of mourning. He was later reunited with Gonou, now Cho Hakkai. The two of them became good friends and roommates before embarking on the journey with Sanzo several years later. When Gojyo previously lived in the world, he was known as General Kenren, a boisterous and flirtatious raven-haired god who lacked respect for all of his superior officers other than his friend Tenpou. He was fond of women, but was even fonder of sake, which he was often found sipping while lounging in one of the sakura trees in Heaven. Kenren was usually the one to ruffle the feathers of his superior officers, with Tenpou examining the results. Source: Saiyuki Fansite f a t e d and Saiyuki.wikia. Edited for spelling
Age: 22 Birthday: September 21 Sign: Virgo Blood Type: AB Height: 181 cm (5'11) Weight: 69 kg (153 lbs.) Hair: Brown Eyes: Green Hobbies: Drinking Dislikes: Not known Despite his pleasant and calm outward expression, Hakkai is a demon not to be reckoned with. He is capable of channeling his chi into powerful bursts of energy in battle, and can also form it into a shield to protect himself or his friends. He wears three ear cuffs that are his limiters. When removed, his true power is released. He can often dispatch demons much larger than himself or numerous foes in this form. Hakkai is often reluctant to do so due to the possible danger to his friends. Hakkai is the member of the four journeying with Sanzo that tends to mother the others [for lack of a better term], cleaning up after them, shopping, etc. The jeep that the group of four is driven in by Hakkai is actually his small magical dragon companion, Hakuryu. Backstory Long before the journey to the west, Hakkai was known as the human Cho Gonou, an orphan who later met and married his older sister Cho Kanan. He was a teacher in the village that they later lived in together. One day, Gonou returned from work to find that the townspeople had given his wife as an offering to the centipede demon Hyakuganmaou because they saw her as the most expendible of the women, being without relatives. Enraged, Gonou slaughtered a large number of townsfolk before journeying to the demon's castle. There he killed every demon he found single-handedly. Coming upon the imprisoned Kanan, he wanted to free her and take her home with him. She informed him that she couldn't leave with him, since she had been raped and impregnated by the demon king. Using Gonou's blade, she killed herself in front of her husband. The distraught Cho Gonou was come upon by the remaining son of Hyakuganmaou, Chin Yisou, who attacked him, slicing his belly. Wanting to find out whether or not a tale that he'd heard was true, Chin Yisou dripped his own blood into Gonou's wound. Having now bathed in the blood of 1,000 demons, Gonou became one, killing Yisou before leaving the castle. The wounded Cho Gonou was saved physically by the half-demon Sha Gojyo, and spiritually by Genjo Sanzo, taking the new name Cho Hakkai as a symbol of his rebirth. He and Gojyo became very good friends [and roommates] due to their experiences together before the journey to the west. Many times, Hakkai still reflects on his past pain, and his memories of Kanan are bittersweet. In his previous life, Hakkai was a god in Heaven. He was known as Field Marshall Tenpou, an eccentric military man who was fond of his library of books, many of which were about the world below. He could often be found with his nose in a book [or buried under them] in his library. He was the friend of Konzen Douji as well as his subordinate General Kenren. He and Kenren were fairly inseparable and had an easy-going relationship despite their difference in rank. Their soon to be enemy Li Touten [father of Nataku], referred to Kenren as Tenpou's 'husband' at one point. Although Tenpou tended to be mild-mannered, when provoked he was not to be taken lightly and would fiercely defend those that he cared about, qualities that he carried over into his next life. The god's weapon of choice was the katana. (Source: Saiyuki Fansite f a t e d and Saiyuki Wikia)
Age: 25 Birthday: November 29 Sign: Sagittarius Blood Type: A Height: 177 cm (5'10") Weight: 64 kg (141 lbs.) Hair: Blond Eyes: Violet Hobbies: Not many. He does read the newspaper, though Dislikes: Rain. Just about anything he finds annoying. And cats Sanzou is a handsome creature that is anything but the traditional Buddhist monk. He is ill-tempered, swears, eats meat, drinks, and is usually seen with a cigarette hanging from his lips. Sanzou is the bearer of the Maten scripture, which allows him to banish demons. Sanzou also possesses a Smith & Wesson shoureijuu [banishing gun] which he is often seen wielding in battle. At the start of the story, he was bidden by the Three Aspects to journey to India with his three companions to stop the resurrection of the demon King Gyuumaou. Backstory Before Sanzou was bestowed his present title, he was known as Kouryuu, the river orphan. He was found by his mentor Koumyou Sanzou when he was just a baby, abandoned to float downstream. Koumyou raised and taught him, and was held by Kouryuu in high regard. Shortly after Kouryuu was named as Koumyou's successor, Koumyou was killed while protecting Kouryuu from demons that were raiding their temple looking for the holy scriptures. They succeeded in stealing the Seiten Scripture that Koumyou bore, but left behind the Maten Scripture. The young Genjou Sanzou subsequently went on a search to recover his master's stolen scripture, but was unsuccessful. Several years later, he came under the employ of the Three Aspects in order for them to help him in his task. Although he remembers his master fondly, Sanzou is often haunted by the memory of Koumyou's death. He despises the rain due to the fact that it poured down on the night of his master's death, and often broods whenever it falls from the sky, usually refusing to go out into it. Despite the fact that Sanzou's abilities are undeniable, he often feels as though he is unworthy of the title that his master bestowed upon him, but yet strives to become strong enough to one day see himself as deserving of it. In his previous life, Sanzou was the god Konzen Douji, the nephew of the Merciful Goddess Kanzeon, who is often seen watching over him and his group from her place in heaven. He was an ill-tempered bureaucrat who had no joy or excitement in his immortal life until it was turned upside down by being named the caretaker of the young Son Gokuu. He subsequently became very attached to his charge, albeit reluctantly. (Source: Saiyuki Fansite f a t e d, Saiyuki Wikia)
