Works in the persecution department. From the middle-high class, he proposes to Shuurei under his father's orders despite his lack of personal interest in her. When he first appears, he is bearing many tanuki-themed accessories including a golden statue, causing Seiran to nickname him "Tan-tan." He does not like putting effort into anything and thus is both intrigued and annoyed by Shuurei's continual determination to do her best. However, Tan-tan can clearly perceive a situation's complete context or a person's true character, making him a valuable asset to his department, and he tries to lessen Shuurei's naiveté by showing her the evils of the world. Seiran considers Tan-tan to be a practical influence on Shurei and is unusually willing to engage him in conversation. Nevertheless, Seiran also likes to pelt Suou with bamboo shoots and make him pay for random purchases, calling him "Saifu #2" (wallet #2, after Ensei as #1). Tan-tan is roped into the counterfeit paintings investigation by Shurei and ends up arresting his father, who was used in a larger plot. He saves Shurei from being fired when Riku Seiga steals her research proposal. Since then, Tan-tan has followed Shurei and re-entered the persecution department as her assistant.

Age: 16 (at the start of the series), 30 (at the end of the Light Novel) Zodiac: Sagittarius Blood type: O Shuurei Kou is the daughter and only child of Shouka Kou of the Kou clan, one of the two most powerful clans in Saiunkoku. She is sixteen years old when the story begins. As a descendant of the direct line, she has the title hime, which means "princess" or "lady." Despite the high social status of her family, Shuurei grew up in relatively impoverished circumstances. Her father's job brought little income, and much of the wealth of their family home was given to the needy during the devastating fight for the imperial succession eight years ago. There are no servants at the Kou residence, so Shuurei has grown adept at household chores such as needlework, cooking and cleaning, traits unusual in a lady of high social standing. She has also held a number of odd jobs to earn money, acting as a professional erhu player, working as an accountant at Kochou's brothel in the Red Light District, and serving as a teacher at the local temple. In the English version, her name is Shurei Hong since Kou is another family name in the series. Kou has two kanji symbols in Japanese, one red the other Yellow, which explains why two families have the same romanised name. Age: 24 The General of the Shaorin army. Part of the Ran family, one of the two greatest clans. The fourth oldest of five brothers. A very skilled swordsman and is usually calm, but likes to tease others. He was supposed to be guarding the Emperor with Kouyuu, but since Ryuuki was nowhere to be found, he and Kouyuu were left in the library for a month being bored. When he was 18, he took the Imperial Civil Exam, passing in second place (Bogen). A few years later, he transferred over to the Yulin Guard. He claims to be Kouyuu's best friend, though Kouyuu keeps denying it. Shuuei is usually the one that gets Kouyuu all riled up by mentioning things like his lack of direction and his woman-hating ideals. Unlike Kouyuu, Shuuei is a womanizer. He often mentions how nice it is to spend time with women and was seen surrounded by a horde of women after winning the fighting tournament. In charge of the Civil/Public Administration Department and has been head of the Kou family for nearly fifteen years. He is Shouka's younger brother, Shuurei's uncle, and Kouyuu's boss as well as adoptive father. He said his reason for adopting Kouyuu was because his older brother adopted a child so he wanted to adopt a random child to share his brother's experience. Although, Shouka revealed to Kouyuu that Reishin thinks of him as his own child. He's good friends with Kijin since he's allowed to be around him when he's not wearing a mask. He's also the one making all those different masks for Kijin. Kijin describes him as being crafty, coolheaded, and cold hearted, but Reishin is usually seen very cheerful, easy-going, and sometimes childish. He sometimes plays tricks on other officials. Reishin is known to get carried away with things easily, going overboard with nearly everything (such as when Shuurei becomes ill and Reishin brings over just about every kind of medicine available, regardless of its relevance). Also, despite having difficulty finding the courage to tell Shuurei of his relation to her, he is shown to be an extremely protective uncle, going so far as to throw his fan (with clear murderous intent) at Ryuuki when the emperor attempted to articulate his desire to win over Shuurei's affections. He also requests that Shuurei call him "ojisan" which is used to address an uncle (or simply a middle-aged man), so as to avoid having to give his name.
The youngest of the five brothers of the Ran family. He is eighteen years old. It is said that, out of his four older brothers he was the most worthy of the name Ryuuren Ran because he is a genius. He calls his older brothers foolish and doesn't call them by their name, rather: Shuuei = "foolish elder brother the fourth." Recently, he's called Shuurei, Soul Friend #1, and Eigetsu, Soul Friend #2 (He refers to Yougetsu as Soul Friend #2.5). He does things on his own time and is quite impulsive: when he was going to buy ingredients for chicken stew with Shuurei, he ended up buying soy beans, then he traded that for boiled eggs, then traded the eggs for spring onions, then the spring onions for wood blocks, then flowers, then fish, then straw, and then he gave away the straw to a little girl and just ended up with one stalk of straw. Later in the series, he goes ghost hunting after hearing about a late-night ghost. He also pulls out his flute and plays it without warning, often off key. Since he can't be easily told what to do and is very unpredictable, he's necessary in the Ran family. Although, because of this behavior many find him weird and annoying, so they usually distance themselves from him. The middle brother. He finds the world very boring and seeks to amuse himself, morals are of no consequence. Upon being told by his grandfather that he is to marry the Kou princess, Sakujun arranges to meet Shuurei in person, under the disguised name of Lin Senya, and finds himself intrigued by her. He dies right before season 1 ends. He also shows himself to Eigetsu in season 2 for the first few episodes as a ghost, and also as part of Shuurei's flashback. Even though he is told to be seeking amusement from her until he gets bored, he slowly falls in love with her.He said in the game with Seiran that will give her anything she wants and will do anything in his power to satisfy her and that the only thing/person in the world that matters to him is only Shuurei. In his last moments when he's about to die he again comments on how he liked Shuurei with her hair down. In his mind he said that in the games he played so far Shuurei is the only one who has the ability to easily beat him while he had to struggle. Then when he asked Shuurei to give him Gok-Long tea he puts poison in the water and antidote in the Gok-Long flower.
