At the summer festival, when Rin and Itsuki come to visit Yuzuki, Rin speaks with Nanami about Nanami's true feelings for Haruto and how Haruto served as a "safety net" for Nanami. Later, during the festival, Nanami made her decision to reject Haruto, after hearing that Haruto looked for Yuzuki when she was missing and because of jealousy over Yuzuki; one of the many reasons was because he seemed to care more about Yuzuki than her, making her insecure about dating him. Since then she has been avoiding Haruto because their situation and acting extremely cold towards him. Nanami later visits Tokyo with Haruto on a school trip. She follows him as he went to give a present to Yuzuki and asks Haruto if he can pretend to be her boyfriend for a moment and holds his hand. This leads to a misunderstanding between Haruto and Yuzuki, that appears to ultimately result in Yuzuki breaking up with Haruto. When Haruto returns to their home town, Nanami feels bad seeing how depressed Haruto is. As a result, Nanami appears to have finally recognized her true feelings for him and is now actively pursuing Haruto so she can become his girlfriend. She recently quit her manager position with the baseball club not only to join Haruto in the cooking club but also so she can walk home with him. Kanzaki then hears from Rin that Yuzuki has a new boyfriend, but doesn't tell Haruto since he seems much happier lately. However, after discovering that Haruto is still secretly hoping Yuzuki will come back to him, she reveals the truth about Yuzuki's new boyfriend and confesses her desire to be his girlfriend. He then proceeds to put her confession on hold because he believes that Yuzuki is in trouble and does not believe that the letter she wrote is the full truth. After Haruto returns from Tokyo in the winter, she claimed having moved on, but she blushed when Haruto said that the reason why he remembers her birthday (the first time they saw each other since he transferred) is because he likes her. Machi Kuragi is a fictional character and the school treasurer of Kaibara High School in the manga entitled Fruits Basket. Machi is a quiet and shy character, and appears to be sensitive and rather isolated. She only appears in the Fruits Basket manga and drama CDs, where she's voiced by Yuki Kaida. Machi is the half-sister of Kakeru Manabe. Manabe is very protective of her and can often be seen ordering her around, more out of brotherly love than sibling superiority. Machi is a very quiet character, though she later begins to show her more stubborn side. She also appears to be quite humble towards Yuki and the other council members, often doing what ever they say and rarely speaking up for her own wishes—that is, if she has any. Despite all such things, however, Machi is a deeply kind and caring girl on the inside, as shown by her heartwarming reactions.

Little is known about Machi. Her parents are fishermen and she has described her older brother as being similar to Ushiro in behavior. She was the one who discovered Kokopelli's cave and she was reluctant to sign the contract but Waku's push forced her to become a part of it. When the children were introduced to their chairs, Maki initially thought Machi's chair was hers. During Chizu's scenario, it was Machi who chastised her about her senseless killing of innocent civilians. During Kanji's story arc, Kanji warns Jun to "watch out for Machi", and later, when he sits atop Chutenro Tower waiting to die, he contemplates who the next pilot is, but for some reason, rules out Machi, implying that there is something that he knew about Machi but did not reveal to the others. She later reveals that she's Dung Beetle's Sister and she wasn't part of the contract because she was from another earth but later she decides to sign again after Ushiro, revealing that being of another earth was not the reason for being out of the contract. In the anime series, Kirie not only deduces that she is the one not bound to the contract besides Kana, but also that she knew more than she let on, as she was the one who attracted the rest of the children to the cave where they made the contract and also knew better about the rules than anybody else. Koemushi reveals that she is in fact, his little sister, sent with Kokopelli to the children's Earth with the mission to gather the rest of the pilots. Machi can also telepathically talk to Koemushi. Tired of seeing the same story of suffering and death being repeated at each world she passes, Machi ends killing Koemushi and helping Jun to protect her sister by assuming Misumi's place and becoming one of the pilots, instead of Kana, like he had planned.
