Raigyo recently returned to the ship "Zanbani" after a two-year journey wandering the world as a photographer and a vagrant. During his two-year journey, he carried his possessions upon his back covered with a sheet, giving him an almost turtle-like appearance. Like Akiyuki, he is also imbued with a Xam'd hiruko, which might be best described as an endosymbiont (Hiruko [è›­å­�] being Japanese for "leech child"). Raigyo once owned and wore the change of clothing that was given to Akiyuki to wear shortly after Akiyuki regained consciousness aboard the Zanbani. Unlike Akiyuki, Raigyo appears to have greater control over his ability to change between human and Xam'd form and thus, seems to have a better relationship with his own hiruko. He also seems to have enough control that he can prevent himself from turning to stone, a common side-affect that occurs in people imbued with hiruko. This is because both hiruko and humanform weapons are susceptible to turning into stone for some reason. His hiruko resided within his left shoulder. His Xam'd powers seem to be related with water, as water covers his body during his transformation, which gives him the ability to swim fast and create water blades sharp enough to easily cut a humanform in two. A typical high schooler with a charismatic and helpful nature, he lives with his mother who has separated from his father due to marriage problems. Because of this separation, Akiyuki is expected to take a prepared lunch to his father every morning, as well as keep the two's relationship running smoothly. He has two close friends, Haru and Furuichi. One day, he wakes up late and rushes to deliver his father's lunch, which ends up with him barely able to catch the schoolbus. He notices a white haired girl (Nazuna) at the back of the line and lacking the armband needed to actually get on the bus, so he obligingly gives it to her. As they arrive at the school, Nazuna presses a device and blows up the partially filled bus, resulting in a blinding blue explosions that rips apart the vehicle and throws other students on to the ground. In the light from the explosion, a strange light rises from the destruction and disperses into Akiyuki's arm, producing a strange blue gem-like object, however it's forgotten as Akiyuki notices Nazuna wounded on the bus. He rushes to help her, leading her to reveal that she was the bomber. She then presses Akiyuki's forehead, which materializes a red gem-like object, and she faints. Akiyuki's arm then transforms, covering his body in a strange white liquid and turning him into a white creature called Xam'd.

The son of Sumako, an elderly lady with an incurable disease Akiyuki comes across. He is presumed dead to his loved ones, but he is the sole survivor of the battle of Barador.

Akiyuki's father and Fusa's estranged husband. He's a local doctor for his community and treats the elderly of the area. He's a slob, and his family often comes to his office to take care of him, doing his cooking and laundry. He cares more about his work than his wife and son, and was pretty much the last to know about the disappearance of his son after the island was attacked. He acts rather despondent vis-Ã -vis his impotence in keeping his family together. It seems that he has a troubled past as a military researcher who worked on humanform weaponization projects and now deeply regrets his involvement that has taken his son from him.
